Packwood wants feds
out of DMSO regulation
DMSO, the controversial
wonder drug developed by a
University doctor soon will be
regulated by the state if Sen
Bob Packwood R-Ore., has his
way
“I tee! very strongly that re
sponsibility for the use of DMSO
be removed from the cumber
some federal process, as
Oregonians have indicated they
want.' Packwood says
The Food and Drug Adminis
tration is currently in charge of
regulating and distributing
DMSO in Oregon
Dr Stanley Jacob associate
professor of surgery at the
University's Health Science
Center in Portland has per
formed tests with DMSO since
the early 1960s He has found
the drug effective for relieving
pain caused by arm and leg in
juries arthritis and burns
DMSO also aids in the treat
I
merit of eye disease, spinal cord
injuries, and even cancer, he
says
Despite Jacob s research, the
FDA has remained cautious
about the use of the drug Not
until 1978 did the FDA authorize
physicians to dispense DMSO —
and only tor a rare bladder dis
ease known as intestinal cysti
tis
But now. because of
peculiarities in prescription
laws doctors are tree to pre
scribe the drug tor any disorder
that they believe warrants the
use of DMSO Chuck Williams, a
representative for Dr Jacob,
says that physicians "have a
very wide latitude' in prescrib
ing the drug
If Pack wood s bill passes a
committee made up of mostly
pharmacists and physicians will
prepare regulations and moni
tor the distribution of DMSO
throughout the state, bypassing
the federal regulation process,
Williams says
FDA representatives continue
to insist that their reason for
strict regulation of DMSO is not
to dispute Jacob s research
Industrial-strength DMSO (used
as a degreaser and paint thin
ner) has been readily available
on the black market and in
Oregon stores since the CBS
news program "60 Minutes
placed Dr Jacob and the
"wonder drug" in the national
spotlight
"We re concerned that it can
be a carrier of chemical impuri
ties to the body an FDA official
says
Rep Les AuCoin. D-Forest
Grove introduced legislation
identical to Packwood's Senate
bill in the House of Representa
tives on Sept 24

We ll start with some basic pasta and sauce
