Betty Nivens of Eugene will be recognized for her 20 years of volunteer service toward adequate housing. William Swindells, a retired industrialist from Portland, will be recog nized on behalf of the Oregon Community Foundation. Yoshi ko Uchida of Berkeley, Calif., will be recognized for her chil dren’s books on Japanese American families during World Warll. Niven was appointed the first chairer of the state housing council by Gov. Tom McCall. She has been reappointed by Gov. Robert Straub and Gov. Vic Atiyeh. Niven has lobbied the Legislature for better hous ing, and currently is drafting legislation concerning con dominiums and planned com munities. She was the first woman to be named Eugene’s First Citizen in 1973. Swindells, former chief ex ecutive officer of Willamette In dustries, Inc., has been the driving force behind the Oregon Community Foundation. The foundation has assets of $13 million and distributes nearly $1 million annually to cultural, educational, medical and social service organizations around the state. Swindells has served on the foundation’s board and as president. Yoshiko Uchida is the author of more than 20 books that have been credited with improving Japanese-American relations. Two of her books — "Journey to Topaz” and "Jour ney Home” — document the ex periences of Japanese-Amer ican families who were sent to internment camps during World War II. Uchida lived through the internment experience herself. She received her degree in absentia from the University of California at Berkeley because in 1942 her family was sent first to a California race track and then to a relocation center in Topaz, Utah.
