Approves NCAA fee IFC OKs staff changes By PAUL TELLES Of the Emerald Three pieces of spring hou sekeeping kept the Incidental Fee Committee busy for almost two hours Friday afternoon. The committee, which was elected in April, voted to allow a reorganization of the ASUO Ex ecutive staff budget, to give the NCAA Volunteers for Youth a $200 emergency appropriation and to send a resolution to the EMU Board asking that the board consider amending its EMU office space policies. ASUO vice Pres. Jim Edmun son presented a proposal to require the transfer of $3,057 from ASUO special projects and research and development line items, as well as an allocation of $1,815 from this year’s surplus, to fund the new staff budget. The committee accepted the proposal unanimously after debating the number of staff contained in the proposal. Most of the discussion cen tered on the creation of a min ority affairs director position, which will be responsible for helping minority student programs like the Black Student Union organize its internal affairs and recruit students. The position was budgeted for a stipend of $95 for 12 months, but committee members doubted the office will be necessary during the sum mer. Edmunson said it isn’t yet known how much work the dir ector, who hasn’t been hired yet, will have, but he said he felt some of the programs would need help during the summer. Edmunson also said it would look bad if the minority affairs director was paid more than the newly created budget director. The committee, however, voted to cut the minority affairs posi tion’s stipend to $75 per month. Regarding the NCAA Volun teers for Youth, the committee voted 5 to 0 with one abstention to give the group $200 to pay a membership fee recently im posed by the national organiza tion. Regarding a proposed amendment to EMU office space policies, the committee voted to send the resolution to the EMU Board after the Re sidence Hall Governance Com mittee requested IFC approval of its concept. RHGC repre sentative Craig Larson said he originally intended to ask for $1 in incidental fee funding so he could apply for office space. The board currently gives EMU office space only to IFC-funded organizations. The resolution, approved unanimously, will ask the board to consider a policy for making exceptions for worthwhile groups. The University is one of several major colleges in the nation that has established a Learning Resources Center for just such a purpose — to help students reap the full benefits of college. At the heart of the University’s LRC program — located in Room 5 Friendly Hall — is an accredited course that instructs new students in effective study techniques. Introduction to University Study, ALS 101, is a 10-week course offered fall, winter and spring terms. LRC director Dave Hubin and assistant director Susan Lesyk teach the course. ALS 101 helps new students become effective at listening, reading and note-taking, in addition to teaching them how to prepare for exams. “Our premise is that studying at the University is significantly different for new students and that it’s important to address how to study successfully,'’ Hubin says. The course is designed primarily for freshmen, but so phomores who are unhappy with their performance are wel come to enroll, Hubin says dis’ser ta’tions Quick and inexpensive: We are graduate school approved and guarantee our copies to pass graduate school requirements and most cders can be completed within 24 hours.
