sports Ducks roll over PSU, 78-40 Oregon’s women’s basketball team added another game to its win column Wednesday, scor ing an easy 78-40 victory over league foes Portland State University in Portland. The win gives the Ducks, ranked 20th nationally, a 12-5 season record and brings their league record to 2-0. Portland State is now 0-2 in league ac tion. The win also evens out the series record between Oregon and PSU at eight apiece. Oregon has won the last seven contests. ‘‘A lot of people played a lot," said Oregon coach Elwin Heiny, praising the teams overall effort. Three Ducks scored in double figures, and for the first time this season every Oregon player got on the board. Bev Smith, Oregon’s 6-0 for ward standout, and Angie Snider, a 5-10 freshman guard, scored 13 points apiece, fol lowed by Alison Lang with 12 points. While Heiny wouldn’t single out any single player, he said Angie Snider, who added five assists, ‘‘did an outstanding job.” Only one Viking made it into double figures as the Ducks controlled the boards through out most of the game, grabbing 42 rebounds to 36 for PSU. Basically, Oregon just out played the Vikings, who now have a 6-8 season record. The Ducks shot 51.6 percent from the floor, 33-64, while PSU could only manage to shoot 31.3 percent, 16-51, as Oregon was able to block shots and nab rebounds away from the Viking squad. PSU did manage to pull away from the Ducks in the tree-throw column, shooting 66.6 percent, 8-12, while Oregon shot 63.6 percent, 14-22. Friday night the Duck women will travel to Corvallis to face Oregon State University. Oregon, which deafeated OSU 72-71 in the Guisti Tournament earlier this season, holds a slim 10-7 lead in the series record between the two universities. Swimmers host CS-Sac With an 89-51 upset of Oregon State behind it, the Oregon women’s swimming team hosts Cal State Sacramento today at 7 p.m. at Leighton Pool. The Ducks will then travel to University of Washington Friday for a 7 p.m. meet. Oregon won 13 of 16 events against OSU. Kathy Hemmer led the Ducks with wins in the 500 freestyle (5:08.61), 100 butterfly (1:00 38) and 200 freestyle (1:58.54).
