Class offers therapy, credit By JEFF ENGLAND Of the Emerald Keeping physically fit when handicapped or while recovering from an injury is possible through a Physical Education Service Course en titled PE Parallels. “After trauma, surgery or injury the therapy used to be a cast with no participation or exercise,” says class instruc tor Barbara Yost. “Now, the best treatment consists of low resistance range-of-motion exercises and participation to the extent that the patient can handle without severe pain. This keeps muscle atrophy to a minimum and allows the rest of the body to stay in condition.” Students are provided witf one-to-one instruction or car develop their own programs and work independently. Weight training, swimming flexibility and range-of-motior exercises comprise the course, which can be repeated five times so that students un able to participate in regular PE classes may fulfill their University requirements. Paraplegic biology major Alberto Naranjo says, "I can get credits for a session that would cost me $20 at Sacred Heart (Hospital).” "A lifesaver,” is how Pamela Marx describes the class. Her goal to run in a marathon is postponed by an apparent muscle tear in her thigh. “This class gives me another goal to work for until I get well. Having other people to work out with makes me want to work harder, while I work at my own pace and set up my own pro gram.” Yost sees PE Parallels as part of a gradually developing effort by the University to meet the needs of handicapped students. A planning committee has been formed to look into an intramurals program for handicapped students that could include tennis, bascket ball, swimming and archery. But, she adds, a stronger indication of interest is neces sary for the PE department to further facilitate those needs. Yost is also disturbed that many students unable to take regular PE courses obtain waivers from University PE requirements when they could actively participate in her class. “Adaptive students need physical activity even more so," says Yost. In many of her students she sees “a big change in self confidence and a better attitude about being in school again." Photo by Keith Allen Lori Bouchard, a student in the PE Parallels class and her instructor, Barbara Yost, do situps in part of a physical therapy program. Yost says the class represents a University effort to meet the needs of handicapped students.
