r«y« i Perlo says Watergate reaction a healthy sign By RICK WORTHINGTON Of the Emerald “It is our view that President Nixon represents the far right forces in America and that his arrogation of powers...represents a trend toward fascism in the U.S.A.” So stated Victor Perlo, renowned Marxist political economist and chairman of the Economic Committee of the Communist Party (CP) of the U.S.A., in a morning press conference on campus Monday. Perlo also spoke in the EMU Monday evening on “Watergate and the Economy.” His visit to Eugene was sponsored in part by the New University Conference. Perlo asserted that the CP has been conducting a year-old campaign for the impeachment of Nixon, fully realizing that “We don’t think Nixon is isolated. He was chosen by almost all large cor porations and rich people.” However, he feels that the recent “explosion” surrounding Watergate “represents the democratic sentiments of the American people which surface in crisis times.” Perlo called this a “healthy sign,” and asserted that in addition to being abhorred by clearly illegal and illegitimate acts by the Nixon administration, more and more American people are beginning to interpret in a systematic manner the basic struc tures of present day “state monopoly capitalism.” It is because of the possibilities that this trend presents, Perlo said, that he is optimistic about the prospects for significant social change in America. Regarding the CP’s campaign for im peachment, Perlo claimed that “the capitalist class plans to substitute Ford for Nixon.” (Continued on Page 7) Rotary hits OSPIRG’s findings By TOM SOWA Of the Emerald “OSPIRG (Oregon Student Public Interest Research Group) is here to stay, just like the mayor of Portland,” asserted Neil Robblee, a staff attorney for the student public interest group. But after beginning to explain the group and its history to the weekly meeting of the Emerald Rotarians at Bev’s Steak House Monday afternoon, Robblee soon found himself discussing OSPIRG’s credibility. In response to questions from members of the banking and real estate professions, two areas recently studied by OSPIRG, Robblee stated that though there are bound to be disagreements with some of the group’s findings, there have been, so far, no in stances when any of the facts supplied by OSPIRG have been disproved. Any problem of credibility, he claims, is due to the misun derstanding of OSPIRG’s pur pose. Robblee emphasized that the group has chosen and will continue to choose research projects that will affect a significant segment of the population. “For this reason, we have avoided certain areas, like student rights. Our main thrust,” he continued, “is with consumer issues.” A graduate of Stanford Law School, Robblee has worked for OSPIRG for a year and a half, doing what he called “quality control.” In addition to handling legal matters, he carefully reviews the research work of OSPIRG’s student fact-finders.
