The coalition, chaired by Garrett, is a federation of several groups including the ADA. ACLU, AFL-CIO, the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom and the Lane County Committee to Impeach Nixon Each organization has committed funds and labor to the coalition. ‘The main thrust of our campaign will be informational,” Garrett said. ‘‘We want to emphasize to the public that impeachment does not mean the removal of the President from office, but it means putting him on trial before the U.S. Senate. By SANDRA McDONOUGH Of the Emerald “Thus, one of our primary goals is to inform the public that a resolution for impeachment, when approved by a simple majority of the U S House of Representatives, is like an indictment issued by a grand jury It simply means the President should be given a fair and just trial before the Senate.” Garrett explained that many people hesitate to write their Congressmen in favor of impeachment because they believe they would be advocating the President’s removal from office without proof of his wrong doings. He stressed the importance of un derstanding that the impeachment proceedings would consist of trials to determine whether there are grounds for ousting Nixon from office. They are not a guarantee of his removal. “Recently, however, our Fourth District Congressman, John Dellenback. said he would vote against any impeachment resolution unless a substantial number of the allegations against the President were proven true,” Garrett continued. “We ask in response. ‘Do our courts demand that a person be proven guilty before they will try him’’’ The answer is ‘No,’ and John Dellenback knows it. “We want to emphasize to our Republican Congressman that the voters of the Fourth District will not tolerate his customary fence straddling on this issue involving the very essence and future of constitutional democracy in America. His statement seems to indicate a desire to frustrate this constitutional process of finding the truth, and the Fourth District Coalition for Impeachment will be bringing Representative Dellenback’s apparent refusal to work within the system to the attention of the public,” Garrett said. “We will be asking the voters of the Fourth District to persuade Dellenback to respect the intent and purpose of the impeachment clause of the constitution, and remind him that his career in Congress depends on the voters of the Fourth District. Bowing to the will of Richard Nixon is not enough to remain in office any more,” he con tinued. Garrett commented that the main charge the Congress can bring against Nixon in impeachment proceedings is obstruction of justice. “Most people believe that he is not being honest and coming forth with the information he ought to,” he explained. “The President, with his loss of leadership capacity, can’t work as President. He’s lost the confidence of the people,” Porter added. “He is helpless as President and he has to be removed because, in these days, we need a president with the faith and trust of the American people.” The impeachment coalition's plans include an information analysis which they will use to explain impeachment proceedings to the public The coalition hopes to produce a theatrical staging of model impeachment trials to illustrate the process. It also intends in the next few days to poll elected officials in the Fourth District and have them make public statements about the impeachment movement. “We think (elected representatives) should come out and tell us where they stand. And they haven’t said anything so far,” Garrett explained. The elected officers of the coalition include Garrett as chairman, former ASUO President Ron Eachus as secretary-treasurer and Win McCormack as director of publicity.
