Simple Plot, Good Laughs Makes Servant' Sparkle IIUIU > Ofth- CarnU In the absence of Chris Houg lum, esteemed Emerald critic emeritus, this writer has been pressed into service and the following critique of the I'm -•ersity Theatre s current pro dncUoa "The Serv ant of Two Masters." by Carlo Goldoni, ap pears in print. Of course, there is the prob lem of what it was that I saw. Any mild mannered theatre - goer would consider it a simple comedy with a touch of slap stick Bu{ -salt. Don bisboff. Register-Guard counter part to the absent Hougtom. terms it: . . the widly comic farce of the conunedia dell arte So thats what it was And he should know You learn some thing every day Anyhow, the storyline is simple There is this serv ant. and he is an enterprising soul and works for two masters at the same time Good But one master is a young woman, disguised as her broth er. the brother being -lair, who is looking for her loser, the killer of her brother Actually it was a duel Or something. Fine. So the problem is. the brother is the other master Right It isn’t much of a plot To complicate things, add two more lovers, a pair of fathers, a brace of waiters a hand maiden and a chef And now for why it was an enjoyable show. For one Robert Gage as Truffaidino. the bumbling serv ant and Deborah Franks as Smeraldina the handmaiden. Chilton Cunningham, as the disguised girl, handled the alien role m tine form and delivered her lines and audience-asides with great effectiveness Equally effective was Lou Salerni. the over wrought, arm waving, foot stomping Doctor Lombardi, an ev er picked on ex tremely frustrated old man Action took place in a square of Venice and on the steps of an inn. The set was simple, yet believeable, and mechanics of scene changes were accomplish ed flawlessly by a building front dropped from above. Lights and sound were excellent In short, though the story line is nothing new and the end ing predictable 1 they all lived happily ever after), the show does sparkle with a number of good lines, some good laughs and a narawr i>l good perform ances II protides a relaxing evening of entertainment, with no real moral burden to inter pret >.> nabobs® and implication, at least to the mild mannered and that was hopefully the ba sic intent U so. they succeeded Tickets for remaining per formances.
