Fashion Pointers Give Women Extra Polish By ALLISON HARE Along with flowers and show ers, spring brings new shapes, new colors, and styles in women's clothing. Each spring pastel col ors, more feminine shapes, and airier, lighter fabrics come in But each spring, also, variations in this general warmer-weather trend are more specific, more in dividual. These finer distinctions in style make each year's styles different and newer than last year's. Ob servance of these finer distinc tions in style is what gives a wo man the fashion polish, the strik ing look which transcends the average and makes her stand out. This year's fashion points cover everything from basics to acces sories. SKIRTS: The biggest news this spring is the casual wear skirt, a wrap-around, not full, barely flared, and ultra-simple. City PASTEL SPRING coats in mo hair over matching shifts are big news this spring. wear skirts are best in a simple A-shape made of the same materi al as a spring coat. SHOES: Cut-away shoes are coining in for summer, some with cut-out backs, most with cut-out sides. The stacked heel, whether flat or high, is a must. Heels should never be too high; the spike heel is out. The straight heel, no curve, is the newest Shine makes the shoe, either glos sy patents or, very new, the non dressy reptiles. Yellow, creme, and coffee colors (black only for dress) are this spring’s shoe col ors. COLORS: The ice-cream shades are prevalent, no bright, vivid, , shocking shades. French vanilla, moca, bronze, leafy green, and quiet, subtle pastels replace the majenta, turquoise, chartreuse, and pink-oranges of last spring. For city-wear navy and cranberry ; red sparked with starchy white arc always in. Black gets by in the daytime only if it is with lots | of white. BAGS: Handbags are small again but not clutch size for day time. Gone are the big, square ! satchels which became catchalls. Bags are back to softer, rounded ; corners, sometimes accented with bamboo or brass handles. Bag j materials are the same as shoes but should mate with, not match, the shoes. HATS: Straw, whether shiny or matte-finish, takes precedence over any other fabric for hats. The unfloppy leghorn and the "Gigi look" bretton are geared to flatter the newest hairstyles. JEWELRY: Simplicity and col or are the biggest news in jewel i ry. Glass, enamel, and jade take the place of fake jewels (unless they are in big. startling rings). ' Colored or stained glass pins, enameled flowers, and jade set in gold accent the new clothers Jew elry should be interesting, rather ! than conventional. DRESSES: The A-shape flare and the fitted shift take the lead in spring shapes. Dress and coat of the same fabric and cut are the biggest single outfit for spring. High waists and sleeves are back, but with a fitted look For casual or beach wear, the T shift, a long knee-length knitted tunic is both comfortable and sty lish. Knit ensembles continue to dominate fashion. COATS: Soft and creamy pastel mohair is big fabric news in spring coats. Straight backs, semi fitted fronts, high waists, and A shapes—all are spring coat dic tates. The collar has all but dis appeared in coatware. HAIR: Springtime hairdoes are shiny, silky, and unteascd. They have a minimum of curl and a maximum of shape. Hair of even length is most popular (blunt cut), but the unshaggy pixie cut | (Oliver cut) is flattering to young faces. Hair color should still be helped and highlighted when it is , needed, but with the natural col or and complexion in mind.
