MtJNfwMy •emerald SPORTS Freshman Bowler Rolls High Game Judy McCavie sparked her team to a four-game sweep over its opponents by rolling a 220 game and a 557 series in last Thurs da> night's mixed foursome league. The freshman bowler racked up six straight strikes in rolling the highest game and ser ies in the league for a woman and leading her team into second place. Still holding the top spot in Thursday's competition after five weeks of play is team five, com posed of Karen Jacobsen. Sue Yarborough. Larry Parker and Larry Moore. Tuesday night's mixed four some action saw team seven take over first place with a four-game sweep. Leading the quartet has been Phin Capron who has scored a 236 game and a 612 series and a 190 average, all high for the league. The remaining team mem bers are Shari Williams, Kay Simpson and Dave Johnson. RUSH INN 854 E. 13th Oil the Campus , Fran Dauelsberg heads the | women’s statistics for Tuesday night with 220 and 564 as well as an average of 159. In addition. Bob Donaldson rolled 193-199 204 last week for a 596 series and boosted his average to 185 for 15 games. Sharon Knott, who holds a 160 average to top Thursday night women, bowled 152-188-169 (509) last week. She had also made it over the 200 mark with a 216 game three weeks ago. Larry Moore claims the high game and average for his section wuth 235 and 198 respectively, while Larry Parker rolled a 621 series. The league, which is co-spon sored by WRA and the SU Rec reation Department, has one more week of play followed by position night for each section The champions from each divis ion will then meet to determine the league champion. Then Casanova started talking seriously about Saturday's up coming game with the powerful Ohio State Buckeyes. "They are a real tough team. They’ve had a little bit of hard luck this year.": In looking back on Saturday’s comeback win over Washington State Cas commented. “Football is played in four quarters and it’s the end results that count. Wash ington State was a good, tough team.” Sophomore quarterback Bob Berry received praise from the Oregon mentor as "a fine com petitor.” Also, "Berry did an ex ceptional job.” The Duck defense was lauded by Cas as Ron Snidow and Greg Willener were singled out for superior individual performances on the line. “When you throw 37 passes you’re bound to complete some of them,” commented Casanova The Duck coach felt that the fine job the defensive line did on the Cougars’ George Reed and other rushers forced them to pass much more than they planned. And the defensive backfield did a fine job too, holding two of the finest receivers on the coast to 182 yards. Oregon’s fullbacks were the featured players at the meeting and senior Jim Josephson seemed pleased with himself after scor ing the first TD by a fullback this season. “The fullbacks had a pool and the first to score a TD would get a case of beer from the others. There are the “super-stars” who win most of the glory and there are the “un sung heroes” who perform their tasks faithfully and often with out the recognition of the fans. The football team has the line men. The basketball team has the play-making guard and the base ball team has the catcher. The swimming team also has its unnoticed stars. In an inter view Tuesday Coach Don Van Rossen listed his “dark horses” whom he is “putting a lot of faith in.” Rick Bently, a sophomore from Woodlands, Calif., Van Rossen describes as “doing really well.” The five-foot, eight-inch, 142 pounder won high school letters in water polo and baseball. He is one of Van Rossen’s better water polo players. His forte is the breaststroke. Bently’s hobby is the piano. His future plans include going into law school A junior from Beaverton, Pete Fullerton, stands 5-11 and weighs 165 pounds. In high school he was a National Honor Society, student. He hopes to go into Bio chemistry research. He is being counted on to come through for the Ducks in the backstroke. In the Varsity-Frosh meet, held November 7, he fin ished first in the 200-yard back stroke. Marlon Fletchall is called the “most improved swimmer on the team” by Van Rossen. The junior from Junction City Ls a pre-med student. He stands 5-11 and weighs in at 165. He won a high school let- i ter in tennis, marathon. The 6-1, 167-pounder hails from Champaign, 111. He hopes to go into architecture as a career. His main hobby is hunting Savage won two letters in track while he was in high school. He finished a good fourth in the 100-yard freestyle at the Varsity Frosh meet. These are the boys that most opposing teams feel they don’t have to worry about. Yet, they will do a lot of damage. They will be the second-place winners when second-place winners are needed. For it is not the first place finishers that clinch the meet, it’s the other point-makers. This year Coach Van Rossen is using a new system to get these swimmers and the rest of the team ready for the tough meets ahead. Besides the rigorous physical training the squad members are given, they are also being sub jected to psychological prepara tion. Throughout the swim team locker room signs with inscrip tions such as: “A Winner Never Quits, A Quitter Never Wins” and “Slow Swimmers Never Die, BUT They Don’t Win, Either!” can be seen taped to the walls. Van Rossen feels that the team morale is really high and the Ducks should provide Oregon with a team to be proud of.
