after an investigation led by Nix
on, then a young Congressman.
Hiss, a former state depart
ment employee, was sent to prison
for lying about his association
with the late Whittaker Cham
bers, an admitted Soviet spy
courier.
The American Broadcasting
Company said today that if Rich

Klein referred to a remark by
Smith at the end of the show.
Smith said, "He applied the word
traitor to President Truman and
Governor Stevenson and Secre
tary Acheson. He was vague as
to what they were traitors to . . .
but the word meant the worst to

of the normal rough and tumble
of politics. It not only damages
good men, it damages national
life.”

week’s election will cause little
change in the committee rankings
of Oregon members of Congress.
Election defeats, withdrawals
and deaths create opportunities
for advance ment up the seniority
ladder, which is the basis for
ranking members of the commit
tees that do the basic legislative
work on Congress.
Assuming no changes in basic
committee assignments wnen the
3f’th Congress convenes Jan 9,
here’s how the Oregon members
should rank:
