' "SMASHUP" With SUSAN HAYWARD -CO-HIT "STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN"with david niven STARTS SUNDAY — Doors Open at 1:45 voices who can sing, this film should be entertaining. But. those who have seen or heard a produc tion of “Carmen" will undoubted ly be upset if not by the voices at least by Mr. Hammerstein’s terrible lyrics. Of the leading characters, only Pearl Bailey is permitted to sing with her own voice. Transplanted to South As most know, this version of Bizet s opera is transplanted to the American south during the second World War. Harry Bela fonte plays Joe (Don Jose). The musical is a fairly faithful trans portation of the opera, consid ering the plot, but poor writing detracts from the total effect. Films of a dubious nature will be shown over the weekend at the Heilig. “The Spoilers” and Hold Back Tomorrow” play through Saturday. Jeff Chandler and Anne Baxter star in the former, a story of the “North country.” Beginning Sunday the Heilig will show "The Last Frontier" and "Inside Detroit.” Second-run films, vintage models, compose the film fare at the Mayflower.
