.Social Hygiene Movie Tested Dr. Adolph Weinzirl of the Uni versity of Oregon medical school in Portland recently disclosed that experiments are nearing the final stages for development of an edu cational motion picture on human growth and development. Designed for use at the junior high school level, the film will be the first of its kind ever produced. It is sponsored by the E. C. Brown Trust, division of social hygiene education, of the University of Oregon medical school to supple ment the statewide social hygiene educational program in Oregon. The social hygiene program is un der the leadership of Dr. Weinzirl, director of the E. C. Brown Trust >and director of social hygiene in the University of Oregon medical school. Mrs. 'George Moorhead, as sociate professor of physical edu cation the University of Oregon, is field secretary, and Dr. Harry K. Newbyatn;:. University president, iB administrator of the Trust. An experimental version of the film Hi sound-slide form has been produced for testing purposes by Dr. Lester F. Beck, associate pro fessor of psychology in the Univer sity. The film (1) presents a body of pictorial matter and well-organ ized facts on human growth and re production; (2) defines the role of the teacher and demonstrates how she can effectively handle the other wise difficult subject; and (3) shows the reactions of the junior high school students to the material. “The last two points are rarely shown in educational films,” Dr. Beck said. “The teacher is over looked and the learner disregard ed.” The completed sound-slide experi mental film is now being used to teach classes, and is also being shown to parents, teachers, youth leaders, and qualified experts in the field of social hygiene for critical analysis. Students are being given written examinations on the film, Dr. Beck explained, and sound recordings of classroom reactions to the film are being made while the film is being run. The selected adult audiences are being asked to record their reac tions and suggestions. The Oregon psychologist said the experimental work will be carried on until the film is fully tested and its educational worth precisely de termined. As a further test, one copy of the film will be taken by Dr. Wein zirl and Mrs. Moorhead will show the film to the American Social Hygiene association at its national convention in New York November 18. Another New York showing will be made for Harry Shapiro, cura tor of anthropology in the Ameri can museum of natural history. Following the appraisal, Dr. Weinzirl said the E. C. Brown Trust expects to turn the sound-slide film : over to a producer of educational films for conversion into motion picture form. The approved experi mental film will be used as the script of the motion picture. Dr. Beck spent one month this summer investigating the nation’s leading educational film producers in New York, Chicago, Hollywood, San Francisco, and Washington, D. C. It is expected that the produc er with the best facilities and staff will be selected to produce the film. Already the leading Hollywood producers have indicated strong in terest in the film. Assisting the film adviser in in vestigations and experimental work are University of Oregon students majoring in psychology. Eugene eity schools are cooperating in the studies. Dr. Beck praised the coop eration of George Nelson, principal of Roosevelt junior high school, and Marianne Blenkinsop, health edu cation teacher, without whose help he said the first stage of the experi ments would not have been possi ble.
