McCar thy, 2931 Harvard Ave., has enlist ed in the United States Air Force lor a period of four years. He will take his basic training at Parks Air Force Base, Calif. He was graduated from Rose burg High School in 1955. Oregon Hospitals Ask Federal Funds For Expansion Taylor Says Koreans Deserve U. S. Assistance WASHINGTON ( Gen. Max well D. Taylor, in his first speech as Army chief of staff, said Tues day that no nation could be more deserving of American assistance than the Republic of Korea. Taylor, who recently returned from his post as U. N. and U. S. commander in the Far East praised the spirit of the Korean people, the bravery and compe tence of its soldiers and the energy of its civilians. He- spoke at a meeting sponsored by the American-Korean Foundation whose pur pose is to aid Korea. PORTLAND tfl Nine Oregon hospitals and one nursing home have requested federal aid funds for proposed expansion, tt! State Board of Health said here. Applicants and amounts are: Portland Osteopathic Hospital. $223,891; Rogue Valley Memorial Hospital, Medford, $586,533; Leep Memorial Hospital, Bandon, $63,833.33; Hood River Memorial Hospital, $196,333.33; Eugene-Lane County Health Dept., $42,358.33; Blue Mountain General Hospital. Prairie City, $6,833.33; State of Oregon, for addition to State Hospital, Salem, $50,000; Holladay Park Memorial Hospital Portland, $12,030.22; Pacific Communities Hospital, Newport, $41,110, and Sisters of Mercy Nursing Home, North Bend, $571,210. Funds will be alloted by the State Board of Health after Hill Burton federal aid money has been appropriated by Congress. The appropriation Is expected sometime within the next month. The board's advisory council on hospital constriction will review the requests and make recom mendations before the board meets. The construction funds are paid jointly by the state, the federal government, and the sponsoring hospital. U. S. Air Force Academy Opens Doors To Cadets DENVER W The IT. 3. Air Force Academy owned its doom to the first class of 306 cadets this week amid salutes from roaring jet bombers, the snap of martial music and inspirauonai worus oi Air Force leaders. Secretary of the Air Force Har old E. Talboit told me cadets ana 3,000 invited guests at Lowry Air Base that "it is to the human ele ment that the Air Force Academy is dedicated, and especially, to the leadership we must have if our country is to survive." Honor guards from the U. S. Naval Academy at Annapolis and the U. S. Military Academy at West Point paraded in review. The air cadets were dressed in khaki trousers and shirts with Air Force blue caps and epaulets. They marched with precision into the dedication area on a taxi-way at Lowry, temporary headquarters of the academy until its perma nent home Is ready at Colorado Springs in 1957. The cadets enrolled at the acad emy early Monday and in the hours before the dedication cere monies were hastily drilled by sec ond lieutenants from the staff at West Point. Curfew Ordered At- Air Force Base WICHITA FALLS, Tex. HI Sheppard Air Force Base ordered a 9 p.m. curfew for the 16,000 airmen and officers at the base after gang fights and near-fights broke out during the weekend be tween civilian teen-agers and mili tary men. it was not clear what the fight ing was about. Only one casualty has resulted an airman was slashed and beat en at a city park a week ago. But the Wichita Falls Record News said no single incident set off the tension, which began build ing up about 10 days ago. Authorities said they were tipped that both airmen and civilian teen agers began carrying weapons, including pistols, Sunday. Col. Melvin S. Hollidge, deputy base commander, said the latest incident occurred Sunday night be-1 hind a baseball park and 50 air men were apprehended. Davis, district ' public works officer, said negotia tions for acquisition of some 800 acres of land, including the pres ent airport and nearby property, I will begin next month. I The project has been opposed ! by some interests in the Hillsboro i area. At a public hearing held by j the Navy last month, farmers said they objected because of the loss i of farming land.
