CAS TAX CONFERENCE PORTLAND m The annual meeting of the Pacific Division of the North American Gasoline Tax Conference will be held here Tues day with delegates expected from seven Western states. The conference will discuss pro posals for reform and simplifica tion of tax law affecting the indus try, a spokesman said. Local Community Nevs Briefs Returns To Coquill Patricia Bowen has returned to her home in Coquille after spending i week visiting in Roseburg at the home of her uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. W. E. Jones. From Portland Ellis ProweU and Darrel Davis came to Rose burg over the weekend from Port land where the latter resides. Mrs. Price and Mrs. Grell are sisters. Return Home Mr. and Mrs. Walt Smith and family have re turned to their home at 1011 Ala meda Ave., Roseburg, following a two-week vacation spent traveling and seeing friends and relatives in the West. Thev visited in Salt Lake City, traveled through west ern Wyoming, viewing the Grand Tetons and spending two days in Yellowstone National Park before continuing on to Spokane and Yak ima, Wash. In Yakima they spent some time with Smith's mother, Mrs. Marian Weinman. Smith said their stay at Yellowstone was cut snort oy me cold weawer ana snow. Accepts New Position Mrs. Paul (Sandy) Dodd, Winston, is the new executive secretary for Doug las County School Supt. Kenneth F. Barneburg. Mrs. Dodd had pre viously served as secretary to Douglas High School Principal Da vid Potter. She replaces Mrs. Wes ley Fitch who resigned in April. Go Fishing Mr. and Mrs. Wal ter Welker and son, David, and Mr. and Mrs. Perry Thiele and son. Karl, spent the weekend at Salmon Harbor. David Welker caught a 22 Li pound chinook salmon and Mrs. Welker caught a 33Mi bound salmon. This was Mrs. Wel der's first fishing experience. The wnoie pany caugni nine saimon. Installs Officers Mr. and Mrs. Don Hagedorn and Mr. and Mrs. Robert Tripod l attended the instal lation of officers and banquet of the Grants Pass Junior Chamber of Commerce Saturday evening. Hagedorn conducted the installa tion of Jaycee and Jay-C-Ette of ficers. He is District 6 vice presi dent of the Oregon Junior Cham ber of Commerce. Tripodi is pres ident of the Roseburg Jaycee chapter. At Coot Bay Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Apperson visited friends re cently in Coos Bay. To Coast Mr. and Mrs. Carl Nickens and son. Dick, and their son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. John Shirley, of Rose burg spent Sunday at Winchester Bay deep sea fishing. Hat Surgery A former local resident. Mrs. Paul Maisenbach. is reported to be recovering satis factorily from major surgery, per formed Friday at St. Joseph's Hos pital, in Eureka, Cam. Back From Trip Mrs. Ray mond Carlisle of Flourney Valley and her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. A. Huskey of Rose burg, are back at their homes from a trip to the Middle West to visit relatives and friends. Construction Journal Shows Building Increase PORTLAND W The light con struction journal Western Build ing reported Tuesday that there was 11 per cent more building in the West last month than in June, 1054. All types of construction In creased except houses and there was a slight drop in that cata gory from last year, the journal reported. The total valuation of building permits issued in the 296 Western cities and counties was reported as $365,082,947, compared to $328.- 919,649 in June, 1954. The Stanford Research Institute, which was hired to look into the feasibility of a world fair here in 1959, recommended the regional celebration, providing adequate funds can be raised.
