Nicholas frofn Los Angeles are visiting Mrs. Nicholas' sister-in-law, Mrs. J. E. McClintock. They plan to return Sunday. Mrs. Gorrell Here Mrs. Lulu Gorrell. who was Douglas County School Superintendent for eight years, is spending several weeks in Roseburg visiting at the home of her sister, Mrs. Keoa Hartley. She resided in Eugene two years after moving from Roseburg, aft er which she spent a year at Char lotte Amalie, SU Thomas, Virgin Islands, with her daughter. Miss Helen Gorrell, who owns the Sea Chest marine supply store there. Miss Gorrell was formerly of this city. On account of another daugh ter's illness, Mrs. Gorrell returned to Portland to assist in her care, Her daughter, Mrs. N. L, Ashby, ' will be remembered here as Ar dis Gorrell. She had just been discharged from an eight months' stay in the hospital. Mr, and Mrs. Ashby and six-year-old son, Tom my, are now en route to Rich mond, Calif., where Mr. Ashby has been transferred by the Hous ing Authority. When he finds a home there, Mrs. Gorrell will join the family to make her homo with them until Mrs. Ashby has entirely recovered from her illness. Until Mr. Ashby finds a home, Mrs. Ash by and Tommy will visit in Los Angeles at the home of the lat ter's paternal grandparents. Chapman Girls Enjoy Grandmother's Visit By ERMA FIELDING Mrs. U. F. Mr. and Mrs. W. C. Thurlow returned to their home in Garden Valley Wednesday noon after spending several days in Portland on business and pleasure. Glass took ihe wheat in payment for subscriptions to his newspapers in McMinnville and Dallas. When the depression was over, he had $14,000. With this nest egg, he founded a printing company in Portland and became wealthy. In a half century of life in Port land, Glass was active in politics, civic affairs, sports and his church. He retired from business 30 years ago. His printing concern, Glass and Prudhomme, became one of the largest in the Northwest. Among his activities were: Chairman of the state. Republican Central Com mittee, a Portland city commis sioner, chairman of a committee that began development of the Port land waterfront, one of the original owners of the Portland baseball team when it entered the Pacific Coast League, and an owner and director of una Portland entry in t'ne old Northwest Baseball League. Four Armory Projects Held Back By Freeze SALEM tSl Four Oregon arm ory construction projects are being held back by the Defense Depart ment freeze on new work, Col Paul L. Kliever said Thursday. Kliever, director of armories for the Oregon National Guard, said there was no nformation here on when the freeze would be ended Affected are three projects for which bids had been called: Addi tions to existing armories at Baker and The Dalles, and a new armory at Milton-Freewater. Also affected is an oddition to the Forest Grove -rmory. That project was ready or bids but they had not yet been sallod.
