Martin I ST ILL-L Last time we were on Die Coast highway, just before we reached the Jebediah Smith memorial mark er I wai wishing that we might open the News-Review some day and find Paul Jenkins had photo graphed that glorious view of Smith River which you see from the top of the grade. I also added that there were so many lovely views right here in Douglas coun ty . . . the lakes, the highways, the Umpqua 1 just wished Mr. Jenkins would take his camera and give us a picture-log. , , . A day or so later, there were pictures of Cleawnx lakes, and of the Jehediah Smith marker not to mention charming "human in terest," as photographers call it, added by inclusion of Mrs. Jenk ins, Dencse Doak and Sue Arm son. ("I was thrilled!" Sue Arm son said in the Library, the other day, "is was such a wonderful drive!") I couldn't see just what the three were "tobogganing" on, but I sup pose they thought to take a piece of waxed linoleum. That, I've heard, is the usual way to do It. The dunes wonderful sight! are so steep it may well be one could dispense with the linoleum. The view of Hcceta Head in Lane county was a fine one. W. A. Langille, state historian, would like to have us say "ay-thay-tah" for that Hcceta, thus approximat ing Senor Bruno Hccela'i own way of pronouncing it. He's the Spanish explorer, you know, who entered the mouth of the Colum bia in 1775 - didn't catch on that it was a river, not a bay, and so lost his chance to tag it for the Spanish crown. That was twenty years before Lewis and Clark ar rived, and seventeen years before Capt. Robert Gray sent his wing ed Columbia sailing through the pounding surf and claimed the river for us. Well, Capt. Hcccta's name claims this bit of the coast which he described in his diary. Always keep a diary when you go explor ing - even if you call it nowadays a motor-log! But to return to the Paul Jen kins pictures: I'd like to see one of Mill creek covered bridge; one of that dramatic sight that greets the eye when you drive up the grade, before you reach Heeds port, and suddenly - there's the Umpqua, nh words fail me! Surety you don't need a milepost number to know the exact spot I mean. I do wish a certain photograph er would capture for us the pic tures we wish we could snap of highway 38, and can't with a little Kodak and only amateur know how; the pictures which we can tuck in letters and say, "Here's what I've been trying to tell you in words about highway .18 and our river! Here's a bit of Oregon!" Losee Honored On Retirement From Lions Post Forrest Losee, retiring governor of Linns District 36-E, was honored by the Roseburg Lions Thursday night. Mrs. Losee and their daugh ter, Lorraine, were also guests. Additional guests included the new district governor, Lew Hardin, and his wife from Grants Pass. Losee and his cabinet secretary, Phil Harth, were both presented gifts. A report of activities in the district during the last year was read by Losee. He visited each of the 27 clubs in his district. Hardin announced that he is ap pointing Walter Welker of the Rose burg club as zone chairman. Lions participation in the July 4 fireworks display at the fair grounds was discussed. The club will set up and supervise the food concession at the grounds, but the operation and selling of hambur gers and soft drinks will be han dled by representatives from other service organizations. Orton hent was inducted as a new member. Andy Anderson, new 4-11 club leader, was introduced as a cub Linn. Mrs. Bruce Elliott and Mrs. Bernard Saar of the Lady Lions were also guests. Plant Takes Fire While Firemen Away On Parade ROCKV1I.LE, Md July 3 (AP) Fire broke out in a pinball ma chine manufacturing plant here last night while firefighters from eight communities were holding an equip ment parade at Sandy Springs, 11 miles away. Sixteen fire trucks and eight am hiilanrea answered the alarm. One fireman was overcome by smoke. Several others were treat ed for heat exhaustion. Homo From California Mrs. Roy Sedell has returned to her home in this city, following her discharge from a hospital in Oak land, Calif., where she reecnlly un derwent a major operation. Raappointod Mrs. Th o m a s (Sula) Parkinson, Roseburg, has been reappointed for four years as Douglas county public welfare com missioner, according to an an nouncement made by Gov. Douglas McKay. Back From Lake Dr. Hall Seely has returned to his office in the Medical arts building, following a week's vacation spent at Diamond lake with his wife and small son, John, and Mrs. Seely's brother and sister-in-law, Dr. and Mrs. Donald Smith, and sons, Sanford and Ray mond, of Pontiac, Mich. The Michigan visitors have left for their home via Yellowstone National park. Return From Convention John G. Vcrkerkmoes, M.D. of 230 Med ical Arts building, and J. A. Col lerunn, of Mercy hospital, have re turned to Roseburg and resumed their work today, July 3, following a week in San Francisco attending the American Medical association convention. Dr. Verberkmoes at tended the conferences on Internal Medicine and Dr. Collcrunn at tended conferences on Roetenol-ogy. 8 m LOT HQS Mathematical Blunder Foils Would-Be Robber CHICAGO, July 3 CAP Courage and mathematics that was the for mula used Friday by Miss Sarah Jane Windermuth, 54, when she foiled a holdup attempt at the cur rency exchange where she works. A gun-toting, would-be robber shoved this note to her: "Haven't long to live. Count me out $150 in $20 bills or he killed." She refused. The man fled when two customers came in. She commented: "It is impossible to give anybody S150 in $20 bills." Free Fish Fry At Bandon July 4th Beckons Public BANDON-BY-THE-SEA Sever al thousand pounds of deep sea fish will be served piping hot to visitors at Bandon on the Fourth of July in a gesture of hospitality by the Ban don chamber of commerce. Chamber members have been busy catching on sports tackle and filleting the many kinds' of ocean fish, in preparation for the unique feature of this third annual free fish fry and celebration on Independence day. Last year some 4.000 people, including visitors from the four corners of the U.S., en joyed the event. The fish will be French-fried and served at the city park beginning shortly before noon Tuesday, July 4, during an old-fashioned commu nity picnic. Activities featured for the cele bration, providing entertainment throughout the pre-Fourth week end, begin with a special dance Saturday night, July 1, and climax with a huge aerial fireworks dis play the night of the Fourth, set off from the bluff overlooking the I ocean where ample free parking is provider!. Activities include a baseball game helween top Southwestern Or egon league teams from Coquille and Bandon, music by the outstand ing Bandon high school band, spe cial golfers' events at the Bandon Westmost public course, a big dance the eve of the Fourth, deep sea fishing excursions, swimming and beach sports, and an action packed coast guard rescue drill is planned. Completion of the new Tangle wood roller skating rink, the larg est in upstate Oregon, is being rushed for an opening by the Fourth. During the fish fry and picnic, booths will also offer coffee, cold drinks, salad, baked beans, cran berry pie and ice cream made candy and other foods. pitality, . . Private Lonnie Denn Trains In Weather Squadron Private Lonnie T. Denn, USAFR, has returned to his Roseburg home from a 15-day tour of active duty with the U.S. air force reserve at ine base weather station. Portland, Oregon, June 12 to 26. He recently enlisted in detachment 33-27L, 33rd weather squadron, which trains one weekend each month at the Port land airport and spends two weeks in intensive active duty training each year. This unit is designated as a corollary unit trained for im mediate duties manning a weather station in an emergency. In addition to training in the specialized duties of a ground weather observer Private Denn participated in a number of weath er reconnaissance flights in con nection with the active duty train ing of the 403rd troop carrier wing, which was on active duty during the sa'me period. Gen. Thomas E. Rilea, state adjutant general. The 18-month course is to be of fered to unmarried men between the ages of 20 and 28 with two years college training. Graduates will be commissioned 2nd lieutenants in the air national guard.
