Routine Affairs Engage Council At Canyonville By MRS. H. M. ANDERSON - Niwt-Rtvttw Cormpond.nl Local police problems topped a routine session of the Canyon ville city council Tuesday night. The council voted to approve the appointment of Officer Everett W. Nimmo, who la to take the Elace of Officer Darrell Vreden urg, who is under a doctor's care for a few weeks. Nimmn was appointed by Mayor Albert Mault. Glen Gllmore of the Pacific Highway garage asked the coun cil to grant permission for him to use two or three feet of the city' sidewalk, as he wishes to use his gas pumps again soon. The council was Informed bv the city's attorney, James McGinty of Myrtle Creek, that the council does not have the power to grant any business permission to use public sidewalks. James Daugherty of Roseburg, Canyonville's former engineer, w as on hand and stated he would be glad to be of service to the city again, as he understood the set-up of Canyonville's sewer sys tem better than anyone else. However, the mayor informed him the city was not ready to have him or any other engineer go ahead at the present time but that the city does want the con tour maps of Canyonville which Daugherty has in hhs possession. Daugherty stated the topographic map which he has is the original, and Is his own, but he would be glad to order some copies for the city. The council approved the ordering of two which Daugherty Is to have printed In Portland for about $5 each. Joe Walker, councilman, re signed at Tuesday's meeting and the vacancy will be filled bv an appointment by Mault, subject to the council's approval. The library committee of the Women's club met with the coun cil and asked to use the council room in the city hall as tempo rary quarters for their library. The council granted them this privilege. Mis. Veda Anderson and Mrs. Dorothy Chappell rep resented the committee. The council requested H. J. Hash, city recorder, to write to the State Highway department requesting that crosswalks be painted at the downtown Inter sections for pedestrian crossings; also to try and get white lines fialnted on either side of the yel ow line down the center of the highway through the city, to slow down traffic through town. Engineer J. R. Daugherty said he had been requested by the Canyonville city council to have a tracing copy made of the new topographic map to be used for the design of a sanitary sewer system. Daugherty explained that sev eral programs for federal and state aid in financing sewer con struction are in the process of development and It would be ad visable to have plana ready to take advantage of any assistance possible. , . - Canyonville Is anxious, he said, to have a sewer system and dis posal plant as required by the State Sanitary authority. He add ed that his topographic map was prepared as part of the prelimi nary engineering work. Oregon Advertising Man Loses Leg In Accident SEATTLE, Sept. 23 UP) Rob ert K. County Seeks To Regain Jail Sold With Vacant Lot KLAMATH FALLS. Sept. 22- UP With a check for $51.50. made out to Mrs. Ethel Casey of Beatty, Klamath county is trying to buy back a federal jail Inad vertently tossed In with the sale of a supposedly vacant lot. The jail In question is at Beat ty on the Klamath Indian res ervation, and the mixup came about this way: About 20 years ago Frank Schmltr, Beatty merchants, deed ed to the county a lot in the res ervation town to be used for jail purposes only and the county, with help from Beatty residents and possibly from Klamath agen cy, constructed a one-story con crete jail building. But since the countv operated a lockup at Bly, 10 miles dowtr the highway, it really had little or no use for the Beatty struc ture, consequently it was taken over by Indian service officers for detention of reservation wrongdoers and became popular ly known as a federal jail. The structure at full occupan cyholds six persons. - Through some error at the courthouse, the lot on which the Jail stands became listed with county property up for gale and in 1918 Mrs. Casey bought It. Still the error wasn't detected until this week when Mrs. Casey presented the Klamath Indian agency with a bill for rental $30 a month for the past year. The county then saw the light and redfacedly tendered Mrs. LAST CHANCE to hear this unusual speaker Friday, Saturday I 1 r t ana sunaay nights at 7:30 P. M. Sunday morning at 11:00 o.m.
