10 Tht News-Review, Roseburg, Ort Frl., Sept. 23, 1949 "TICK'S" TIPS ON HOSPITAL Status Of Institution, Functions And Activities Mentioned By Malarkey By L. J. "TICK" MALARKEY V1rn. Hoipital, RoMburf Way back in 1916 the Morning Oregonian wai persuaded Into paying thli writer some money for "hitting and hunting" out police news on an ancient and battered typewriter at the station house located on Second and Oak streets, Portland, Ore. Uncle Samuel Inflated Tirt Blows Off Rim, Kills An Aviator ANCHORAGE, Sept. 2-im Inflation of a truck tire Wednes day blew off a lock rim. and killed a Fort Richardson airman. The public Information office repported the member of the 82.3rd Engineer Aviation Battal ion was dead upon arrival at a hospital. The office (aid the rim appar ently wa not secure. When the airman started to inflate the tire the rim flew off and struck his forehead. The victim's name was withheld until his family is notified. A vear later called and the world lost the Journalistic game of a "would-be" newspaper reporter. Since then, 31 years ago, a lot of water has tumbled down the Umpqua and Into the Pacific ocean while "Pri vate" Malarkey was away from seeking news, police or olherwise. For every thousand gallons of water over the dam there have been almost that many changes so I will try to give you my im pressions of the new Roseburg in general and particular the U. S. Veterans hospital here in this beautiful Umpqua valley. In an editorial published In the hospital newspaper, the UMPQUA TIDINGS, there is Indication that some of the changes that have taken place are not too well un derstood and quoting from that editorial which has the title, "Fa cility, Home or Hospital," the writer attempts to clarify some misconceptions which are well rooted. "'Facility' and 'Home' have been used freely however, by both townspeople and those of us who work here. Upon questioning the matter it was gleaned that 'fa cility' and 'home were terms left over from an old regime. During HEY FISHERMEN! KB TWIN SPORT KINGI WUt. All. Jackson Phone 1003-J the planning stage and after the Initial opening of the VA hospital here, the residents who were liv ing In Roseburg then were used to hearing the Veterans adminis tration spoken of as a "facility' and also the term 'home' came more easily because of the ad jacent County Soldiers home. "In 1938 the VA changed the mission of the facility from that of a domiciliary hospital to an Institution to care for nervous and mental patients. "New equipment was added and recently many additions to the staff have been made to make it a real hospital. "The term 'f; illity' was adopted by the Veterans administration in 1933 and tne term coverea any veterans' activity at that time, but I obsolete in favor of an exact designation of the mission 'of the various Veterans administration set-ups." We like the method by which this editorial appealr to the per sonnel of the hospital to cooper ale with the attempt of both the national and local VA public re lations program to instill in the local community an awarenesa of the mission. Strvica Will Bate Judgment The writer continues: "By continuing to refer to their plat ; of employment as the 'fa cility' whatever a 'facility' may be we are actually doing our selves disservice. It is true in the final analysis that the hos pital will be Judged by the serv ice rendered to the veterans in the community and not by a name alone. Before we can be of service, It Is necessary to advertise Just what kind of service we render. When we speak of it as a hospital, folks will look for hospital services and in this way we can become a more significant factor in .the local situation." This we feel Is an indication of the efforts of Dr. John Hasklns, the manager, In his attempts to give the best medical or surgical care than can be obtained to the veterans who are of necessity guests at this hospital. Just yesterday I ran Into "Big Howard" Beresford. Howard Beresford came to Roseburg the other day light from Washington, D. C. Howard stands Just as erect with his 6 feel 2 inches as when he partici pated in athletics at the Univer sity of Colorado, prior to World War I. A letter winner in three sports, he has devoted his life to collegiate and high school sports and Is now field supervisor of recreation for the Veteran ad ministration. When young Lieut. Beresford came home from the army he re turned to Colorado and acted as head basketball coach for 10 years and assistant In football, Lon Stiner, former head coach at Oregon State, worked with him and the two are looking forward to a visit before his return to Washington, Oct. 3rd. Several years were devoted by Mr. Beresford to news writing. He was sports editor for the Rocky Mountain News at Den ver. This was followed by 14 years In recreation service with the fed eral government and since 19415 1he Veterans administration has claimed his talents. This Is "off the cuff," but we find that this athlete of other years is an accomplished pianist and organist. When Interviewed and asked to make a statement as to his work, Howard had this to say: "We have supervision of all recreation" activities at 130 VA hospitals. These programs Includ ing motion pictures, radio, sports and games, music, social activi ties, shows and entertainment, s 1 'Sifflg ja mm THE OREGON GRANITE CO.
