Indonesia on Verge of Another Session of Terrible Warfare By DEWITT MACKENZIE Associated Press Foreign Affairs Analyst As the cards lie we are likely to see another session of bloody warfare in Indonesia. The armies of the Indonesian Republic and The Netherlands government are girded for a showdown, Indeed the Dutch, declaring that the Republic had embarked on the preliminaries of large scale hostilities, already have be gun "police action" ta "reestab lish law and order." The Re publicans charge the Dutch with being the aggressors. So the fight is on. Dutch troops captured Jogjakarta, the Repub lic's capital, and took into cus tody Premier Mohamed Hatta, President Soekarno and other Republican loaders. Quick intervention by the Unit ed Nations might avert this new horror. But there is nothing else in sight to turn the trick. If civil strife sweeps Java and Sumatra It will produce a reign of terror, as past experience has shown. Primitive elements among the native population get out of hand and there are atrocities too horrible to record here. Natives Won't Share Rule The trouble between the Re public of Indonesia and the Dutch Government (to try to put It on thumbnail) Is this: The Republic demands abso lute independence, shorn of any sort of bond with I he Nether lands. Holland Is trying to turn Its empire into a commonwealth in which the members would acknowledge the crown as the tie; This commonwealth would be similar to the British structure. The Indonesian situation is complicated by the fact that there are six other native govern ments In the Dutch East Indies besides that of the Republic. The latter claims to represent the rich islands of Java, Sumatra and Madoera. The Netherlands had aimed at the establishment of an interim MODEST MAI li: AS Tridtmark Ktfiitrt4 U. This would be the forerunner of the Dutch commonwealth. Premier Hatta of the Republic agreed to this arrangement but he had strong opposition. ' Hatta hasn't been presiding over a unified government. The Communists are a powerful in fluence though curiously they are divided against themselves. There are two groups the Trotskyites, which jupport the government, and the Stalinists which are in opposition. Java, 6umatra Involved Negotiations between the Dutch and the, Republic collapsed al together over the weekend. Then Jhe Netherlands proclaimed the establishment of the interim gov ernment of Indonesia without the Indonesian Republic. That naturally "tore it." How ever, the Dutch didn't stop there. They announced they had proof that the Republic planned to start action on January 1 to create revolts in Java and Su matra against the Dutch. Furthermore it was said that Republican guerrilla troops al ready had infiltrated into Dutch territory. The uprising was to be accompanied by sabotage of pub lic services and widely separ ated attacks by the infiltrating groups. There we have the making of an upheaval which might spread far among the more than 3,000 islands jf the East Indies, with their population of some 75,- 000,000. Communism's Hand Seen The Dutch military forces are estimated at about 125,000, in cluding natives. They are well equipped and could be supple mented. The Republican troops are variously estimated to total anything up to more than 400,000. However, most of them are not well disciplined or well armed, although thev have perhaps 100.- 000 good fighters. We shouldn t overlook that in Indonesia, as in China and the other troubled areas of the Far Last, Communism is sparking the war machines. Thus we see that while the Bolshevist offen sive has slowed down in the European cold war, it is pushing its drive In the Orient. And who can say how great threat the Far East in due course may present to the West ern Democracies? Shirred eggs, chicken livers and scalloped tomatoes make a deli cious main course fur a party luncheon. Let a tossed green salad, hard rolls and butter, des sert and a beverage complete the menu, the dessert might be an apple cobbler with hard sauce or fresh pears baked with spices and brown sugar.
