The story of how ft was cre- aled anew is a sidelight on how: modern botany works. Dr. Thomas H, Goodspeed of the Berkeley Botanical Garden Is responsible for the recreation of the plant. He told about Its birth during a visit to the South Amer ican Botanical Congress here. To bacco was originally a hybrid be tween two entirely different plants. Under some unusual con dition back before history began, they were cross fertilized and produced a new plant which con tinued as a new type. The new plant gradually changed and ulti mately became modern tobacco.
