Grandfather of Tobacco
Plant Being Re-Creafed
TUCUMAN, Argentina MB A
plant which died thousands o
years ago has been recreated and
is growing happily in California,
It is the grandfather of aii to
bacco plants, even though it
would be a considerable dlsap- j
pointment If you fried to smoke j
it. The story of how ft was cre-
aled anew is a sidelight on how:
modern botany works.
Dr. Thomas H, Goodspeed of
the Berkeley Botanical Garden Is
responsible for the recreation of
the plant. He told about Its birth
during a visit to the South Amer
ican Botanical Congress here. To
bacco was originally a hybrid be
tween two entirely different
plants. Under some unusual con
dition back before history began,
they were cross fertilized and
produced a new plant which con
tinued as a new type. The new
plant gradually changed and ulti
mately became modern tobacco.
The parent plants also continued
to exist and their modern de
scendants still grow near each
