ROSEBURG NEWS-REVIEW, ROSEBURG, OREGON TUESDAY, APRIL 13, 1948 FIVE Hospital Here Gives Service For 41 Years Institution, Operated By Sisters of Mercy, Keeps Pace With Modern Needs Mercy Hospital, located In fiark-llke surroundings overlook ng the South Umpqua River in Laurehvood, has been a Roseburs institution for the past 41 years. The hospital was established here in 1907 bv the Catholic order of Sisters of Mercy. Enlarged in 1934 and again in 1940, the original 20-bed hospital now has beds for 50 patients. Ex penditures totalling 570,000 went for new equipment and building improvement during the years 1940-48. Although Merry Hospital Is un der the jurisdiction of the SiRters of Mercy, it is an "indi-pendent unit" no far an manaccmi-nt and finances are concerned. Three sisters of the order are assigned to the hospital, while four others teach at St. Joseph's School. Mercy Hospital is under the di rect supervision of Sister Austin, who also is sister superior h"ie. Sister Mary Kevin is the surgical mpcrvisor and anesthetist, and Sister Mary Joachim is the X-ray laboratory technician. The hoi pital also employs H) graduate nurses, seven undergraduate nur ses, four nurse aides, and other employes. Order Founded in 1831 Sister Austin, who has an Irish charm, has heen superintendent of the hOHpilal since 1!U4. She was as-. icned here in 1939 from Dc MniiK-s, In., follow inc a post graduate course in obstetric. Coming from her native Ireland In 1923 to join the order, she took her nurse's training at Coun cil Bluffs. With one of the most varied programs of any order within the Catholic Church, the Sisters of Mercy conduct colleges, schools, hospitals, and homes for business women, orphans, and the aged. The order was founded at Dub lin, Ireland, by Miss Catherine McAuley in December, 1831. From the first convent, the order spread throughout the world. Work of the order was first brought to the United States in 1843 bv a band of seven sisters, and to Portland, Oregon in 1896 by Mother Joseph Lynch, who pre viously had nursed in the Crimea. At present, jurisdiction of the Sisters of Mercy in the United States is divided into nine pro vinces with a membership of more than 6,000. The order is di rected by a mother general and her council, who reside in Wash ington, D. C. Oregon is included in me province headquartered at Omaha, Neb.
