TUESDAY, JANUARY 13, 1948 NINE Wool Men Oppose Return to Federal Controls on Meat PORTLAND, Jan. 12 CP The Oregon Wool Growers Associa tion will be headed again this year by Ira D. Staggs ol Baker. SlaRgs was elected president and William Steiwer, Fossil, vice president at the close of the two day convention here Saturday. Walter A. Holt. Portland, was reelected secretary-treasurer. Woolmen voted a voluntary 4 mill levy per pound on Oregon produced wool, to build a fund for campaigning against any return to federal controls on meat. The decision doubled a 2-mill levy al ready being collected to finance the national and state organiza tion. They approved the levy after A. P. Davies, American Meat Insti tute speaker, said a resumption of rationing was possible, and Stages called upon the members to 'fight the propaganda that is sweeping the country to slap con trols on us and get the long nose of the government in our busi ness." . The organization's wool com mittee report called for a price support program : modernized wool parity; protective tariffs; a branch status for wool in the U. S. Department of Agriculture; and no freight rate increases. In other action, the woolgrow ers recommended: Appointment of county preda tory animal control committees, and appropriation of more state money for predatory control. A publicity campaign to spur consumption of meat. Appointment, when the next Game Commissioners are named, of one man to represent the live stock Industry and one to repre sent the administration of pub lic lands. No more national parks or monuments at the preesnt time. Increasing national forest for age by resceding after fire or logging. Greater care when burning in fested brush areas. A survey of the northwest wheat supply by Congress, with a view of assuring enough stock and poultry feed. Watching the elk population to avoid overstocking that would endanger livestosk herds.
