Dessert lunch con was served followed by a business meeting and program. Holly and red candles added to the holiday spirit. Attending from Oakland were Mrs. James Brink, Mrs. Kay Stearns, Mrs. Edwin Stearns and Mrs. Will Deardorff and from Glendale were Mrs. Frank Laws and Mrs. B. E. Muchette. Mrs. Ray Buckley and Mrs. Scott Layman were appointed co chairmen of the open house to be held at the new manse on North Jackson street New Year's day. ) The program Included yearbook of prayer by Mrs. Fred Fisher and scripture reading by Mrs. Da ' vid MeCarroll, Mrs. Sam Shoe ', maker and Mrs. N. CHRISTMAS CLUB MEETS WEDNESDAY AT ALLEN HOME Mrs. Clair K. Allen was hostess to the Christmas Club at her home on Watson street Wednes day evening. Dessert was served at 7:30 o'clock followed by an evening of sewing and visiting. Mrs. C. B. Wade was given a birthday cake as the occasion celebrated her birthday. Holly and red candles were used in decoration. Attending were Mrs. Harry Pargeter, Mm. C. R. Wade, Mrs. Deane Bubar. Mrs. Jack Wharton, Mrs. H. C. Church, Mrs. Kenneth Quine, Mrs. Guy Cordon, Mrs. Leon McClintock, Mrs S. G. Palmer, Mrs. Rolstyn Bridges and the hostess. BENEFIT CARD PARTY Pythian Sisters are sponsoring a benefit card party, Dec. 17 at 8 P. M. at the K. of P. Hall. Bridge, pinochle, and 500 will he at play and reservations may be made by telephoning SH.VJ or pur chasing tickets at the K. G. High Insurance office. A display of hand made rus, leather wallets and coin purses made by the blind residents of the community will be exhibited and for sale.' BRIDGE CLUB MEETS AT MORGAN HOME Mrs. Chester Morgan entertain ed her bridge club Wednesday afternoon with luncheon. Christ mas decorations formed a holiday motif. Bridge was a play'during the afternoon with Mrs. H. C. Church receiving the guest prize and Mrs. Leon McClintock hold ing high score for members. Attending were Mrs. Harris Ellsworth, Mrs. (iuy Cordon, Mrs. Church, guests; Mrs. Clnlr Allen, Mm. Deane Bubar, Mrs. Ivan Pickens, Mm. C. B. Wade, Mm. McClintock and the hostess. MRS. BROWN TO BS HOSTESS Mrs. George Brown, assisted by Mm. Margaret Logsdon will be hostess to the D.A.R. at her home Dec. 29 at 7:30 P. M. A Christmas program under the di rection or Mrs. Kay S. Petereouin will be presented. It is entitled "lllgrlm Fathers." KIWANIS PARTY TUESDAY The annual Klwanis Christmas party will be held for Klwanlans, their ladles and guests at the Rivprsdale Grange Hall, Tuesday, Dec. 1H. Turkey dinner will be served at 7 P. Twenty ladies were presented service pins and their caps In the capping ceremony of the Gray Lady Service of the American Red Cross at the Veterans Admin istration hospital auditorium Tuesday evening, Dec. 2. Miss Winifred Williams, director of nursing at the hospital presented the caps to the group who had completed reaulrements for can didacy to the organization. Mrs. Edward Titcomb, chair man of the Gray Lady Service, presented the candidates followed by acceptance of the group by Miss Elisabeth Nolting, ARC field director. A short address was giv en by Dr. Kenneth W. Kinney, clinical director and the certifi cates were awarded the ladies by V. V. Harpham, chairman of the Douglas County chapter of Amer ican Red Cross. Mrs. Catherine Masters, executive secretary of the ARC, Douglas county chapter, awarded the group their service pins. The Gray Lady organization is composed In Roseburg of 31 la dies who give volunteer service to the Red Cross at the hospital in all departments. Through this volunteer service the ladies bring the patients in touch with the community and civilian life and supplement the work of the hos pital staff. At present the Gray Ladles as sist in the medical, nursing, so cial servicp, occupational therapy, musical therapy and library de partments at the hospital. They visit with the patients, write let ters, shop, assist with entertain ment in the various fields men tioned above. In the medical de partment the ladles work under the supervision of the medical staff and assist in social and psychological work with the pa tients. Miss Nolting stated that al though the ladies are required to give only 50 hours of work a year in most Instances over 30 hours a month Is given by each Gray Lady by working one or two days a week at the hospital. Rampant Pacific Ocean Ends Missionary Trip BELLIN'GHAM, Wash.. Dec. 12. (.B Two former G.I.'S who set out In a small sloop two weeks ago to carry Bibles and relgious "help" to Gilbert Island natives were back home today after drifting and tossing tor nearly a week off the Washing ton coast. The two 23-vear-old youths. Marvin Norsteilt and Jack Maier. both of Bellingham, left seattle Nov. 2S for a coral atoll in the Southern Gilbert Islands to re pay natives there who had aided Staler and other seamen when their freighter was shipwrecked during the war. Their storm - battered 35 -foot sloop, the Despy, was picked up by a trawler off Tatoosh Island last Saturday and towed into Neah Bay where they made re pairs. "We ran Into some waves 50 feet high, which was too much for us," Norstedt said. "We lost our life raft and drifted about a week." "Apparently this is the end of our missionary trip." Magellan claimed the Philip pine Islands for Spain in 1521 but colonization did not begin until 1565.
