National Bank With a pain of more than 38 million dollars In deposits and 12 million dollars in loans and dis counts since the last report to the Comptroller of the Currency, loss than four months ago, the United State National Bank of Portland leads the state In both deposits and loans and dis counts, P. L. Metschan manager ot the Roseburg branch, has announced. "The total derjosits of the Rose burg branch are now $14,562,W1. 13", he stated. The latest loans and discounts figure for the United State Na tional Bank of Portland is $123. 275,315. which tepresents a gain of $12,060,724 over the June 30. 1947 total. Total deposits of S554. 537,722 also represents a substan tial gain of $38,099,012 over the June 30 call date. The current statement shows the total resources of the bank to be $5S.705.ti66. Winners Named in Battle of Bands Semi-finals to the Oct 19 "Bat tle of the Bands" finals between Douglas County's most popular western and modern orchestras and the best of Jackson County was decided last night with Kennedy's Dutchmill orchestra and the Oregon Ramblers of Drain winning both the lodges' decision and the approval of the crowd. The Dutchmill aggregation. managed and directed by Dick Kirman and Bob Wible, captured the modern band title and Tom- "y N'chols newly organized .amblers took the western crown over five competing musical or ganizations of Roseburg's Musi cians union, A.F. of M, Local 539. Judges of the contest, in which each orchestra played for 30 min- ui.-o tui uic tiuwu a unliving plea sure and the judges' criticism, were Miss Jean Starkey. wom en's shop manager, formerly of Seattle, Thomas Clark, Myrtle Creek, and Rollie Welsh, rail roadman. The crowd's applause was tne iinai deciding factor, fol lowing a counting of the iudges' ballots. Bands entering the contest which drew a capacity crowd, in cluded Vic Rice's Elks Lodge or chestra, Lou Franco's Happy Val ley (.owooys, jacK uortny s Melo dy Aces, and the two winners. the Dutchmillers, and the Ore gon Hammers. ihe Dutchmill organization, of six-pieces, was comosed of the neucleous of Konny Wilson's band which won the title of the con test held by the union last July, while the Ramblers are a newly organized crew of western musi cians who have been gaining in popularity throughout North Douglas County, currently play ing at Rice Hill Next Sundays contest will see two of the most popular orches tras of Jackson and Josephine counties competing against Douglas County's top two for the Southern Oregon "Battle of the Bands" title, as the Medford union's two bands recently won over Grants Pass in a similar contest.
