Visitinq at Johnson Home Ensign Victor Berkey and his wife, the former Deloras Whee ler of Eugene, are driving cross country from Boston, Mass., and expect lo arrive today to visit the former's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Eric Johnson, who reside at the Eugene Plywood company resi dence at Green. Mrs. Fox is a daughter of Mr Johnson. Ensign Berkey is being sent to Seattle naval district No. 13 for re-assignment, following a year in schools, first at Pennsyl vania university, then at Midship man school, Columbia university New York, and a three months' course at Harvard. A veteran of 10 months as a radioman on a subchaser in the Carribbean, he was later sent to the Mediterran ean area and was in the Sicilian, Salerno and Anzio invasions, where he acquired three stars on his overseas ribbon. He has a 10 day leave and expects to be back In active service again in the near future. Return to Eunene Miss Laura Rebmen. Miss Marie Sakaraison, MissVioIet Joranger and Miss Dorothy Skilbred have left for their homos in Eugene, following the weekend in Roseburg visit ing Miss Thelma Young, Miss Ruby Matthews and Miss Doris Leonard. Navy for the last three years, is enjoying a leave visiting his parents, Mr. and Mrs. O. E. Palmer, in Roseburg. We may take this to be an echo from the Potsdam conference, I believe. America and Britain are determined to force the. issue ugainst Japan. it must be a matter of extreme satisfaction to MarArthur thus to stand before the Mikado's in ner fortress, actively preparing to storm it unless the enemy offers early capitulation. Harking back lo the general's cry "on to To kyo!" when he proclaimed the fall of Manila on Kebruary, and lo other notable orders of-t he-day, one sees the fire of the crusader, whose- mission is to smite Jap aggression and barbarity hip and thigh. . Strafed Worse Than Germany Now this doesn't mean there's 110 chance of Japanese surrender short of amphibious invasion. Capitulation is possible before in vasion although we can't go so far at this juncture as to say it is "probable." The little island kingdom of Ja pan, which is exceptionally vul nerable to bombing, already is enduring an aerial bombardment which exceeds anything that Ger many, or anv other country, ever underwent. That continued at the weekend despite a fierce typhoon. The flimsily built cities are being crushed by the avalanche from the sky. And this assault-coupled with naval bombardment is in creasing as the allied forces are augmented by fresh contingents from Europe. Total Ruin Faced Nippon's navv has been render ed impotent. Her air force is a ghost of its former self. Her war industries are being wiped out. Her railways and other communi cations which never were good are being destroyed so that neither war supplies nor essential foodstuffs can be moved to meet requirements. The main Japanese Islands are almost completely blockaded. To the alcardy formidable naval and air blockade, now has been added the blocking of all important har bors by fields of mines sown by airplanes. Japan is to all intents cut off from the outside world. And she not only is dependent on ,(hat outside world for much of her food and most of her other supplies, but she no longer can ship war. materiel to her forces on the continent and on the Paci fic islands which she still holds. The American-British-Chinese ultimatum of July 26 to Japan gave the alternatives of imme diate unconditional surrender or "prompt and utter destruction." Sc. will lecture in Roseburg Aug. 19-t;. Dr. Rimmer is a na tionally known aulhor and Bible Conference speaker, and for a number of years has been the director of the Bible Research bureau which was established to produce scientific evidence of the truth of the Bible. Dr. Rimmer is the author of twenty-six books, many of them on tho subject of Bible evidences. "Harmony of Science and Script ure," "Dead Men Tell Tales," "Flying Worms," and "The Evi dences of Immortality" arc among the many titles which he has written. Dr. Rimmer's uni que ministry has won him a place in many demonstrations from coast to coast. While In Roseburg, he will speuk at the First Presbyterian church.
