ROSEBURS NEWS-REVIEW, ROSEBURG, OREGON, FRIDAY, APRIL 13, 1945 Five Society and-Clubs By LOTUS KNIGHT PORTER SILVER TEA TO BE LARGE EVENT OF SATURDAY AFTERNOON Final plans have been made by the University of Oregon Moth ers club committees for the charming silver tea to be sponsor ed by the club Saturday after noon, April 14, from two-thirty to Jour-thlrty o'clock, at the Len B. Fishback home on the corner of S. Kane and East Lane streets. A most cordial invitation has been extended to the public to enjoy the occasion, which will honor Mrs. Golda Parker Wick ham, dean of women of the Uni versity of Oregon. All girls of the Junior and Senior High schools, their mothers and teachers are especially urged to attend. All women interested in the Univer sity are Invited to enjoy the oc casion. Proceeds of the tea will be used for furnishing a room in the me morial building at the university. The club sponsors a benefit tea annually to raise funds to assist , in some manner various projects and scholarships of the univer sity. MRS. DOROTHY BOLING HONORED ON BIRTHDAY LOOKINGGLASS On Wed nesday evening April 4, a group of friends gathered and surprised Mrs. Dorothy Boling at her home in Lookingglass, the occasion be ing her birthday. The group pre sented Mrs. Boling with a lovely myrtlewood bowl. The evening was spent playing numerous card games. At a late hour delicious refresh ments were served by Mrs. Ben Jacoby and Mrs. Perley Oar, to Mrs. Boling, the honored guest, her husband, Clifford Boling, Donna and Lannie Boling, Mr. and Mrs. John Uber, Ben Jacoby, Mr. and Mrs. W. Houck and daughter, Mary Anri, Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Oliver and son Mel vin Dale, Perley Oar and Mr. and Mi's. Henry Kitzman and chil dren. GARDEN VALLEY WOMEN'S CLUB HAS MEETING The Garden Valley Women's club met Thursday at the club house. ALBERT KARCHER TO BE HONORED AT FAREWELL PARTY THIS EVENING South Deer Creek grange will sponsor a farewell party honor ing its master, Albert Karcher, tonight, April 13, at eight o'clock at the grange hall. Mr. Karcher is leaving April 18 for service in the U. S. army. All members of the grange, friends and neighbors are cordially invited to enjoy the party. Grange ladies are request ed to bring cake and sandwiches. WOMEN'S STUDY CLUB HAS ENJOYABLE MEETING YONCALLA Mrs. Sam Walk inshaw graciously entertained the members ' of the Yoncalla Women's Study club at her home Thursday afternoon. A dessert luncheon was served before the meeting. Mrs. Harvey Cockeram, president, called the meeting to order. Roll-call was answered by quotations from "Collect for Club Women," written by Mary Stuart. Mrs. Hogan gave an in teresting paper on "American Homes" followed by a fine paper by Mrs. Lewlie Chapman on "Ed ucation." Mrs. Houser and Mrs. Lamberson of the Shoestring dis trict were voted Into the club. Those present included two guests, Mrs. Vcneta Kandel of Portland and Mrs. Georgia Under wood of Oakland. The next meeting will be held IRENE PARKS AND LOERN WRIGHT MARRY REEDSPORT Irene Parks, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. H. W. Parks and a senior in the Reeds port school was united in mar riage at tne name oi tne oriue s parents last Tuesday evening to Loern Wright Fm 2-c U. S. navy and a son of Mr. and Mrs. E. E. Wright of this city. The services were performed by Rev. Jesse K. Griffiths of the local community church. Mrs. Lee Bennington, sis ter of the bride was bridesmaid and Don Carins was bestman. Mr. Wright, who was home on a short leave from tne Faciuc tiect alter service in the South Seas and the bride left for a short wedding tour en route to a southern port where the groom will return to immediate service and the bride after seeing her husband off to service will return to Reedsport to await his return. DEMONSTRATION HELD AT INTERESTING MEETING LOOKINGGLASS A demon stration was given at the school house Thursday evening by Miss Doris McWhortcr, on care and maintenance of electrical equip emnt. This demonstration was en joyed by the ladies and also by the men who were present Miss McWhorter will give another demonstration May 4 on meat cookery. All the ladies in the val ley are urged to be present. EASTER SALE IS SUCCESS AT YONCALLA YONCALLA The W. S. C. S. of the Yoncalla Methodist church cleared over $250 on their recent Easter food and rummage sale. The money realized for this will be used to put a new cement side walk on the south side of the ' rhurrh. Thev wish to thank ev- nrvnnp who so cenerauoslv heln- ed them with this sale. r GARDEN CLUB HAS MEETING TUESDAY CAMAS VALLEY The Garden club met on Tuesday with Mrs. Frank Brown. Twenty-two wom en were present After a tour through the primrose garden a business meeting was held. The president gave an account of the disposition of the last dish gar dens prepared by the club and the high school students. It was decided to make more if they were needed. Mrs. Helen Mayer reported that she had made her second trip to the blood bank and would go again in May. Other members had been unable to go because of a lack of room in the bus. Plans were made for a dele gation to attend a meeting in Rosebure to plan for an exten sion agent for next year. The May meeting will be at tne nome oi Mrs. Emery Thrush on the Wild cat road. MR. AND MRS. SLACK ENTERTAIN CLUB SUTHERLIN Pink camellias and other spring flowers carried out a pretty motif for the seven thirty o'clock salad luncheon giv en Sunday evening by Mr. and Mrs. Brittain Slack, when they graciously entertained the Suth erlin bridge club at their attrac tive home on Fourth avenue. Covers were placed for: Mr. and Mrs. Harry Stearns, Mrs. Ralston Bridges, Mr. and Mrs. Vern Holgate, Mr. and Mrs. Lloyal Stearns and the host and hostess, Mr. and Mrs. Slack. High scores for the evening's contract bridge were won by Mr. Holgate and Mrs. Bridges, low scores went to Harry Stearns and Mrs. Lloyal Stearns with Mrs. Bridges winning the slam prize, and Mrs. Harry Stearns the deuce prize. P.-T. A. MEETS AT POTLUCK SUPPER CAMAS VALLEY The P-T. A. had their regular meeting at the schoolhouse Wednesday night. A fiotluck supper preceded the bus ness meeting. It was voted to give forty dollars to the school faculty for the purchase of books for tne li brary. A meeting of the recrea tional committee was called for the night of April 12. A commit tee from the Garden club pre sented prizes for the bird houses on exhibition. Pearl Edwards played two piano solos. DANCING PARTY HELD' BY STUDENTS CAMAS VALLEY The high school had a dancing party at the school to honor Don Carnes home on leave from the training camp in San Diego. Sconce, pastor of the First Baptist church of Rosebure. who for more than two years has carried on an intimate corre spondence with the new Dresi- dent. The correspondence started while Mr. Truman was still serv ing as United States senator, and prior to his nomination for the vice-presidency, when the Rose burg pastor wrote directly to Mr. Truman to learn his religious af filiation. The reply disclosed Mr. Truman to be a member of the Baptist faith, his pastor, the Rev. Joffrey Swadley of the First Bap tist cnurcn or Granville, Mo., hav ing been a classmate in the theo logical seminary of the Rev. Mr. Sconce. Following an exchange of let ters, Rev.
