I A Society and Clubs By LOTUS KNIGHT PORTER BENEFIT CARD PARTY AND ANTIQUE SHOW TO BE HELD FRIDAY The Ladies Canteen corps o( the American Red Cross) has in vited the public to enjoy a very charming antique show Friday afternoon and evening at the Elks temple and during the even ing a benefit card party will be sponsored in connection with the exhibit. Reservations for the card pal ly may he made by calling Mrs. It. L. Whipple at 10'l.J or Mrs. C. W. Wharton at 102 It. Tea will be served during the afternoon hours and refresh ments will be served later in the evening following the card play. Prizes will be. awarded winncis. Both men and women card play ers are cordially invited to enjoy the affair. The usual charge will be made both afternoon ar,d evening. Proceeds of the affair will fill bags for American soldiers leav ing this country. The shop will be open all Friday afleinoon for members to bring their articles to make ready for the sale the following day. Huskies Get Even With OSC Quint By 44-39 Victory CORVALLIS, Ore., Jan. 21 AP) The University of Wash ington Huskies jumped back into Ihe thick of the northern division basketball race last night by out shooting Oregon Stale, Pacific coast champions, 44-39. The Beavers won Tuesday night, -12-39. The Washington victory threw the Huskies, O. S. C, and Wash ington State college into a tie for second position behind the cur rent pace setters, the University ol ( iregon. It also lent importance in the early phases of the race to the two game series Washington will play witli the division leaders at Eugene Friday and Saturday nights. The Wcbfools grabbed a bulge on the rest of the division by two victories over Idaho before the rest of the league got started. Then I hey split a two-game series with Washington State. The Cou gars open their first series with Idaho Friday night. Last night's was a rugged con test during which 38 fouls were called. Don Durdan, with 20 points, threatened throughout to push the Heavers out in front, but heller marksmanship from the field and foul line kept the Husk-1 ies in the lead. O. S. I Jack Dempsey Ordered j To Pay Wife Alimony J WHITE PLAIN'S, N. V., Jan. 21 j i API - Hannah Williams Demp sey, estranged wife of Ihe former heavyweight boxing champion, I Jack Dempsey, will receive $500 a month temporary alimony and S2.500 counsel fees under order of Supreme Court Justice Witschief. Jusltce Witschief awarded the amount yesterday after Mrs. Dempsey, a former stage actress, asked $1,500 alimony and $10,000 counsel fees when she filed a counter suit for separation here Jan. 8. Dempsey's suit, filed Dec. 9, has been set for trial without jury next month. He asks custody of their two children, Joan, eight, and Barbara, six. The couple was married July 18, 1933, at Elko, Nev. Cruz to Battle Negro 'Champ of California PORTLAND. Jan. 21 (API Matchmaker Joe Waterman will present Costello Cruz, popular California Mexican middleweight, and Jack Chase, Colorado negro who holds the California middle weight title, in a lOround bout here Feb. 2. To bring Cruz, who has won three straight fights here in re cent months, and Chase together, Waterman said he offered a purse of $5,000.
