Little Ponnie Vest celebrated his 7th birthday at his home Thursday with a party for his friends. The children played games on the lawn, after which a delicious lunch was served to Donnie and Eddie Vest, Bill Marslers, Leland Thiel, Gala Mae and Carolyn Thiele, Harley McNab, Billy Lasswell. BAPTIST WOMEN'S SOCIETY TO MEET The Roseburg Baptist Women's society will meet Thursday after noon at two o'clock at the church parlors with the president, Mrs. George Caskey, in cnarge oi ine business session. The devotions will be in charge of Mrs. William Green, with the Guild girls presenting the pro- cram and a play entitled, "The Missionary Dollar Comes to Life." COUNTRY CLUB LADIES V0 ENTERTAIN COTTAGE 'ROVE LADIES THURSDAY The Roseburg ladies of the Country club will entertain the Cottaee Grove ladies Thursday. The an nual Letsom-Colan reunion was held at the Leisom home In Scotts valley Sunday, July 27th. P. N. G. CLUB HAS ENJOYABLE MEETING RIDDLE. Aug. 5. The Past Noble Grand club of the local Re bekah lodge was entertained at the home of Alta Aspey Thurs day, July 31st, their regular monthly meeting. The hostess re versed the order of serving re freshments, serving at the be ginning of the meeting instead of the close. Later In the afternoon, Ann Worthinglon. president, con ducted the business meeting. Plans were made for the supper and entertainment the club has in view for October. Under the good of the order, visitors pres ent, gave talks and suggestions to help the club. Sister Edvthe Kel ley gave an Inspirational talk on the part Rehekahs could have in promoting neace. Sister Laura Bouteli of San Jose also gave an Interesting talk on her recollec tions of early times and her ex periences as a Rebckah. Present were Edythe Florence Keiley, Ethel Bailey. Battery of Artillery Goes Through Roseburg The 215th artillery of the 7th division, en route from Fort Ord, Calif., to Fort Lewis, Wash., passed through Roseburg today. The unit was scheduled to spend the night at Eugene. The 17th infantry, consisting of 1300 men, traveling In 252 vehicles, will ar rive in Roseburg Thursday after noon and will spend the -night here. Arrangements have been made to Quarter the men at the rifle range. There will be a com-1 pany of 250 men remaining over night In Roseburg Monday, Au gust 11, according to present plans, as the troop movement continues. Rich Gold Strike Starts Rush in British Columbia LILLOOET, B. C, Aug. 5. (Canadian Press) Reported dis covery of high grade gold-bearing ore in a wild, mile-high region has sent several score prospectors into the desolate Eliza lake dis trict. The area, 40 miles north of here and about 160 miles north east of Vancouver, is accessible only; by pack train and trail. George Murray, member ot tne British Columbia legislature, said two young prospectors first struck the gold ore several months ago. He said some gold values ran around $100 to the ton of ore. The scene of the gold rush was called Devil s Oven by old-time prospectors because of blazing summer heat in the rocky region. PORTLAND, Aug. 5. (API A charge that a nazi front organi zation had given money to the America First committee was de nied yesterday by General Robert A. Wood, national chairman of the committee. The charge was made by the Oregon American Legion last week. Wood added that the commit tee's strongest support was com ing from the middle west, and said, "I feel we still have a 50-50 chance to keep out of war on an other continent. GARGAN Roseburg Golfers Lose To Rivals at EugM ': A fourteen-man team from tha Roseburg Country club played a close match with the Laurelwood club at Eugene Sunday, losing by the score of 221 to 191. Joyce Dutton of the Eugene club held low score for the day with 7ft and Paul Morgan with 73 had low score for the Roseburg play ers. The last -team game will be played at hoseourg next Sunday l with the Grants Pass club. Two Pay Fines for Spree on Public Highway Fines of $10 each were paid to- day by Hayden L. Laurence, 21, and James R. Laurance, 35, who pleaded guilty in the justice court at Drain to being drunk on a public highway. The arrests were made by the state police.
