ROSEBURG, ORECON, THURSDAY, JUNE 20, 1929. WHY BEAUTIFY? THE first meeting of the city beautiful campaign commit tee was held laxt night in the city hall and the campaign was mapped out. Let no one for one moment get the idea that this campaign is but a passing fancy on the part of a few. I'D is clean-up and beauUficalion campaign is the most im portant undertaking that has faced this county within the last five years. Everyone who is at all familiar with the de tails of the project is extremely enthusiastic about it. Every person in the county will have a share in the campaign, will have his bit to do. It is u big job, an important job, and must be done well. "" There are at the very least two good sound reasons why a clean-up and beautification campaign is of direct and ma terial benefit to a community, and, carried on as this one will bfcj. of direct benefit to a number of communities a whole county. The first of these reasons is the most imjiorlmit be cause it affects our lives directly. The first reason is that such a campaign will make a more beautiful, cleaner and witljal a more satisfactory part of the world in which to live. We will be happier and more contented if our- homes and communities are neat and clean. The second reason why this campaign is of vital importance to us is that it will serve to fertilize one of -our very largest and most profitable crops; new settlers in the county. New settlers come largely as the result of tourist travel. A clean, painted and beautified Doug la county will attract and beckon hcineseekers to come here make their homes and be happy. ". All our shoulders to the wheel now and let's get this campaign rolling. o The arrival of warm weather brings the swimming sea son closer to us; and this year, as formerly, there will be a long list of accidental deaths by drowning, in which the names of young bojs will bo in the majority. Uefore the season b'egins, every city and town ought to resolve to cut this list down as greatly as possible. Patrolling as many bathing beaches as possible .wilj help; so, too, will the dis sdniination of a Jew simple safely-first rules for the swim mers. Parents of acLivo youngsters have an especial respon sibility. If they can impress on their children, before the season opens, the need of using care and common-sense in the water, and can make the children t,ec how serious the consequences of boyish foolishness at the bathing beach can be, they will be doing much to reduce the total of summer bathing beach fatalities.
