Interesting Sight i Ah one cilmliB tlie Hide of the , nioiiutaln, having behind thu cook i shuck, hunk houses and company : officer! which are located In a lit-! tie flat below, you are soon face to luce with one of the blggeHt i mining operations in tho atatu. Klcclric motoiH control the ma chinery, and butteries are used to operate the biiiuU rock cars. These batteries are recharged in the power plant, which waa construct ed nt a greut expense. Traveling on a nurrow path, up and up, you finally reach tho mouth of the lime deposit. Vou puer Into a great hole in the Hide of the mountain, extending upwards and downwards for htmdredB of feet, a hole ho large that It would be pohhIIjIo to drop the Perkins building in it and still have room for a ware house or two. As your eyes finally become ac customed to thu dim light and lime dust which fogs from the mouth of the chasm as the work era are jabbing electric drills in to l he rnck, you jiorceive men tierehi'd high on ledges, climbing I around like so many ants, hut they go about their work with tho skill of a real miner. Tunnel Taps Rock The lime rock is blasted from the sides of this giant hole and it drops (o the floor below, all In small pieces. The work is so car ried on as to allow the good rock to accumulate at the bottom while the dirt and worthless material fails to the outside. The mines from the tunnel which reaches under this deposit tap the loose rock and huge chutes have been constructed with mechanically op eraied doors at the bottom. A string of cars is shoved back Into the tunnel, a man is placed at one o (lie chute doors and as the train Is s: lowly pulled out, ho fills each of the small cars. Tho caiH are then taken down tho hill and the rock finally placed on flat cars for shipment to Portland. Valuable Industry It would be posslblo to give a mass of figures concerning the op eration of tho quarry b.it they would be so meaningless lo the layman who does not realize the magnitude of the project, that it would hardly bo worth the time. The Soul hern Pacific company will ! tell you what this quarry means lo j them. Hundreds of cars are ship-1 ped out yearly to the Portland ce-. ment plant. Not only does it bene-1 tit the southern Pacific- but Hose-1 burg also receives much from this j project. Nearly all of the men who ' are working in Iho quarry are res!-1 dents of this city and the payroll is no small item when one realizes that between 20 and 30 men are employed there 12 months of the year. Mr. Moore estimates that there is enough rock left in tho mountain to assure practically uu more years ol operation. Another' thing to be taken Into: consideration is the quality of the rock which is deposited. Mr. Moore stales that It is so rich In i lime ingredients that tho Portland 1 plant finds It necessary to use an- other kind of nick to mix with it. i Comforts Provided In operating a concern of this kind, Mr. Moore has decided that comfort of tho workers Is seventy five per cent of its success. In order lo provide this comfort, ho has . constructed shower baths, j laundry trays and one of tho finest iw.i.i.i ... ,.u.r .11111111111 (.mull. 11 is thought that within a year j or so facilities w ill be added to i furl her complete tho efficiency of I rho plant. Mr. Moore, who Is an! j experienced quarryman, has as- j : sum hied a crew of men, whose t i hearts and souls are In their work and these men are constantly on ! : the alert for anything which lliey; believe will increase the output of lock and still create no greater j overhead Is so doing, i While Iho writer lias always du , lighted In taking a trip through one. ul the Untpqua Valley's prune i orchurds and has also enjoyed I luskl wahung ihioimh large field TWELVE YEARS AGO we started in business, in Roseburg.
