Ore William Short, 2 Auk. 28 alias Hilly Improvement in business and trade in the Twelfth Federal Re serve District, first noted during June, continued during July, and general business activity during the latter month was near the highest level of the year. The prospect of satisfactory yields of the district' principal crops, and favorable market conditions for crops and livestock were impor tant factors in the maintenance of trade volume during the month. Industrial activity In creased seasonally during July and, as la the previous month, was above the level of a year ago. Gains in Industrial employ ment were reported In all states of the district during July, 1926. as compared with July, 1924. :The volume of credit extended by reporting member banks during July, 1925, was the largest ever recorded, but borrowings from tne Federal Reserve Hank con tinued relatively small In amount. This bank's index of bank de bits, an approximate measure of business activity In the district, advanced from 140 (1918 month ly average equals 100) In June to 147 in July, due allowance be ing made for normal seasonal variation in the actual figures at reported by banks In 20 principal financial and business centers. The July figure, only excepting the figure for February, 1925, (149), was the highest recorded since January, 1919, the earliest month for which such figures are available. A year ago the index stood at 131. Value of building permits Issu ed in 20 principal cities of this district during July. 1925, was 7.5 per cent larger than the value of such permits issued during July, 1924, and exceeded by 3.8 per cent the previous record fi gures for July reported In 1923. The July, 1825, figures wero 16.1 pen cent smaller than simllur fi gures for June, 1925. The norm al seasonal decrease from June to July has been estimated to be approximately 2 per cent. Lumber production at reporting mills of four associations in the district was 6.4 per cent smaller In volume during July than dur ing June, the decrease "being the result, chiefly, of the enstomary curtailment of lumbering opera tions during the first two weeks of July. Output of reporting mills was smaller than either sules or shipments', which also de creased slightly during July, and unfilled orders were larger, and stocks at producing centers smal ler, at the close of the month thnn at Its beginning. Average daily production of petroleum ia California increased by 2.4 per cent during July, 1925, as com pared with Juno, 1925, and was 10.2 per cent larger than estim ated average dally consumption. 6. Te price level of the farm pro- I ducts group, one of tne constitu ent groups of this Index, stood at 162 for July, 1926, or two points (1.3 percent) above the level of all group combined. This Is the first time since March. 1920. that the Index number of the farm products group ha ad vanced to a higher level than the general Index number. The group Index stood at 155 in June, 1926, and 141 In July, 1924. In this district particular significance at taches to the Improvement In livestock prices during the pre sent year. Beef cattle cattle are now at highest level since i;u. Hog prices, although slightly be low the 1925 high point reached in March, are more than 40 per cent higher than they were a year ago. Total loans of reporting mem ber banks of the district reached record levels (1, 116,000.000) on July 15, 1925, and figure of total loans and Investments, at 1 1.669.000,000 on the same date, were also larger than ever be fore. Increase In total loans was the result of Increases In loans secured by stocks and bonds, com mercial loans having declined steadily since July 8, 1925. Since July 15th, volume of total loans has declined and, at f 1, 105.000. 000 on August 5, 1925. they were $9,000,000 (0.8 per cent) smal ler than on July 8th.
