TOOK a taxi to the agent's office: it wasn't really an extravagenee. because 1 wanted to look as fresh and nice aa possible when I got there, and I know that making the trip on street car tho elevated ! would make my drese look wilted. So I a r rived I n style, and went up the stairs to tho crT.ce right behind a ter ribly pomp ous - looking man who had stood In the doorway and stared when I got out ' of the ci.b. I put him down as some body looking for a Job and felt rather sorry for him. ; I dran't have to wait in the ante , room at all; I folt sorry for all the people who were standing around there, when the ofnoe boy came out and said that I was to go right In to Mr. Clbbs' office. And then he turned to the pompous-looking mnn and said, very respectfully: "Will you come In too, Mr. Elk horn." Elkhom! My knees shook, and I had a wild desire to lttugh. I'd set the great Elkhorn down as a man looking for a Job, and folt rather annoyed when he stared Elkhorn-, t the biggest producer In the motion pictures, ssve two who stood on a i par with him. Jack Oibbs Introduced us. gttve mo a chair facing the little window that looked down on Broadway, and said: "Well, this Is the young lady, and If you don't toy she's Just what you j want I'll eat my new straw hat'" j Kikhorn didn't answer for a mo ' ment; he Just sat there and stared 1 at me. and I remembered the way ' Td seen farmers look at cattle thoy Toii'm nery preffy. dcor." he sold. and I turned around and looked' down on the street, thinking prob- I ably they'd rnther feel that I wasn't' listening. liroAdwny looked awfully hot and ' tincomfortnble, hut there were lots of people going to and fro. There wore ever so mnny Klrls, nil painted up anu aressen gnyly. and men In very exagorated-look!n? clothes,' and 1 knew thnt most of them were! motion picture actors, looking fori work. I snw one of the girls from I tho club go by: I knew that she had been out of work for several months, and was simply frantic for some thing to do; she had nobody to whom she could turn to help her out. Having my own people behind me always made me feel perfectly safe, somehow. I knew that If ever things got quite Impossible. I could go back home and they'd be glad to have me. I think that was ono of the reasons I got on so welL Yet some- j times It made me feel rather guilty, 1 too; for Instance. I knew how mv mother would feel If she could have seen me in that ofllce. with these two men looking me over the way they did. "Well, we'll take her, then," Elk. horn said at last, rising and putting on his hat a little detsil like keep ing It off in the res or.ee of a woman meant nothing to him! He patted me on the shoulder again. "Oibbs will tell you a llttlo more about this; then we'll get together aaln at dinner tonight say and settle the thing up. I'd do It now, but I haven't time; got an engagement. I think " He stopped and looked at mo for a moment.
