MIDWINTER THOUGHTS Winter is not the most popular of seasons, particularly with thorn who live in cold climates. The short days are viewed with dislike. Many pcoplo feel dreary and uncomfortable after night fall, and no artificial light seems quite so. good for reading or work Yet this curtain of early darkness (teems to have a certain advantage in shutting out distractions. When spring and sum mer come, out door pleasures call us and make it hard to stick to our tasks. People do more work in winter than through the heats of July and August., They get into regular habits of industry and the will seems better regulaU'd and passing impulses under better control. People are more inclined to home making and social in timacy in the long evenings. The early nightfall makes them studi ous. They have timo to read good books. Daylight-is precious through the short day.L The warning of our grandmothers, to the effect that "No morning sun will last all day" is more than ever shrewd and timely. Put the returning sun, rising a few min utes earlier every morning, brings a thrill of anticipation. The men study seed catalogs, the women also, and the latter are alio looking eagerly nt the spring fashions. There is a suggestion of hopefulness in the lengthening day, of greater cheer and bright ness. It is not surprising that tho primitive peoples of the earth worshipped the sun. His departure in the autumn seemed ominous to disaster, his approach in the spring seemed the victory of light and warmth and fertility. A small lionm constructed after good lines and nested in shrt.bbery and flowers can le just as beautiful as the bigger one on ample land, and its demure modesty suggests home feeling and contentment. It always pays builders, also people who are putting up homes for themselves to consult the best standards of taste. In those days when books of artistic house plans 'can be secured for a very little money, there is no excuse for putting up ugly dwellings. Hy making a home look attractive, a considerable percentage can bo added to its selling value. The neighborhood of small houses planned by a person of refined taste, can be made into a very at tractive residence section, in spite of the small size of the individ ual lots. The city of St. Louis has done fine work in reducing slroet accidents among childre'i, and its methods might well be copied in other places big and little.
