In the nutlonnl forests of Alaska are the latest uses to which the airplane has been put, says Ameri can Forestry, quoting the United States forest service. We read: "It has long been known that there are many lakes on the headlands and Islands traversed by the inside pas sage between Seattle and Skagway that do not appear on any mup. Dur ing the New York-Nome (light made by army aviators, lakes were frequently sighted which could not be found on the latest and most authentls maps of the territory. Tales of unknown wuter bodies are constantly being brought in by trappers and prospectors. Less thnn year ago a lake four and one half miles long and one-half mile wide was discovered at the head of Short buy. This lake has over 1,000 acres of surface area and la less than one and one-quarter miles from tidewater, yet because of the surrounding territory's rough topography has remained un- known and unnamed, lteeognlilng that many other of these "lost hikes' may be sources of valuable water power, the forest service has laid plans to map this no roan's land of the North by nienn of aerial photographs.
