OPTIMIST IS GREAT ASSIST. When Thomas A. Edison opens his mouth in public utterance he usually gives us a message that sticks with us. For example he had the following to say in a recent interview : "I have been through five depressions during my business life. They act all alike. The latest one acts exactly like all the rest. The men, who, as business fell off ( per cent, increased their advertising effort 75 per cent, managed to pull through as if there were no depression, and efforts of such men tend to shorten the periods of depression." Wise words, aren't they? Does Mr. Edison give you the reason for your success or failure? The optimist is the greatest asset to any nation when things go badly. He possesses the control when the dear public thinks the world is headed for ruination. And frequently we find him among the best of advertisers for his beliefs in good advertising is based on the principle that advertising moves the world. And when things are at their worst no man can afford to lay down his tools and say: "What's the use?" It is then that the progressive newspaperman and the progressive merchant get to gether, work twice as hard and achieve results. o THE AFTER EFFECTS OF WAR. The tragic end of Lieut. Col. Whittlesey, noted hero of the "Lost Battalion," who is supposed recently to have jumped over board from a steamer enroute to Cuba, suggests how heavy a bur den many of the ex-soldiers are carrying as the result of their war experiences. Col. Whittlesey had a very sensitive nature, and the horrors of war are supposed to have preyed upon his mind. Some people may have supposed that when the soldiers who had been under fire heard the jcyful news of armistice day they would be ready to resume normal life again just as they left it. But for a lot of them the horror of war had been too deeply seared into their souls. They can not be the same men yet, and some will never be. A man with a calm and philosophical temperament might go through this awful hell, and yet come out none the worse. But anyone with a sensitive and imaginative nature would not pass through the experience so lightly. These sights and sounds of horror would haunt his mind. In many cases severe nervous strain has persisted and the men having had this experience find themselves in constant mental anguish. The existence of many men in this condition should lead the government to do its utmost to see that cases of shell shock and other similar troubles get attention from the most skilled special ists. The friends of men who underwent these severe nervous strains should not feel disheartened if their progress seems slow. Usually nature will heal these exhausted nerves. The rest of us who were far from the line of battle have no conception of what such men have borne for us. Their service and mental suffering represent a-grcat sacrifice that their fellow countrymen should never forget. o The associated charities there's where some good work will be accomplished for the deserving needy of Roseburg. It is an organization that should have been established in Roselwrg long ago but it is not too late to do a great good throughout the city and adjoining communities. Those charitably inclined will not hesitate to give freely, knowing their gifts will be expended judi ciously and with the utmost care through the channels of this worthy organization.
