Yes, 1908 was a good year for Douglas county, but If there Is any thing In Indications 1909 will be the best year this county has ever had The Oregon legislature opens on Jan. 11. All haggling over the sena- torshlp should be "cut out find some good laws passed for the bene fit of tho state. Our "astronomer's" prophesies for the year 1909, published on tho first page of today's Hovlew, can all be verfled if everybody will unite their efforts In boosting the material in terests of Douglas county during the coming year. Tomorrow, Jau. 1, Is a good time to begin. The Review gives thanks to Its numerous patrons for the splendid buBlnoBs enjoyed during 1908. We have tried to reclpocate by giving them the best newspaper ever pub lished In Douglas county, and believe we have, to a considerable degree, succeeded. Our telegrajmlc news service has been materially enlarged and the Docs! Held has been covered more thoroughly than ever before and In a reliable manner. We have continually boosted for new enter prises and institutions and have had the satisfaction of seeing some of them materialize and others put In line for accomplishment during the coming year. "Work woll begun is already half done" la often a true maxim. Having labored for a long time for a more progressive spirit, better roads, better streets and need ed Industries, The Itevlew Btnrta the new year sanguine that more will be accomplished along these tines dur ing 1909 than ever before In a sim ilar period of our county's hlHtnrv We extend congratulations upon the splendid outilook and wlh that every citiien and all his friends mny enjoy nuppinoa anu pruspority during 1909 AGAINST COUNTY DIVISION. People Not willing to Give up North- em run ion or ifttugliui County. (Correspondence Eugene Onnrd.) Koaoburg. Or.. Dec. 30. The nor. tlon of Douglns county which would become a part of a new countv divi sion In caso the Cottage Orovo agit ators snouia be successful, will not be given up by the interests which center about Roseburg without a fight. NoveiiholoBS sonio residents of this city feel that some sort of a division Is Inevitable at a future time, and that in case the Cottage Grove people should carry tho movement to the people that they will bo success ful. In the past Douglns county has al waya fought hard to keep every acre of land possible within her bounda ries. When Lane county Influences nave sougnt to place all of the Bo hemia mining district Inside of thai county, Douglns county legislators have fought the movement with all their might. And their strength has usually proven sufficient. Home of tho people here ronson that there 1b little or no sense In any re-dlvlslon at the present time. They think that tho movement la hen,l,.,l by Cottage Orove men, who want to aggrnnuno tlielr city at the expense m oiner portions or the section, One ninn said: "They merely wnnl the snlnrleB and tho new court limine They don't care anything about the wcuare or Ihe new county. It Btuip ly adds to the expense two olllcorr wnore tnerc was one." Douglas rounty will probably b uui or ucdi in less l nun n year, un dor the teglme of County Judge Won- acotl the 180,000 of the Douglas county oeot nas dwindled to approxl mately IHG, Olio. Therefore, the con riusion ib urawn that with the nex MX levy utile of that sum will re main unpaid. Missionary doctors continue to re port a large Increase In the sale of anti-opium remedies, which, contain ing morphia, produce results worse than opium smoking. It Is evidently desirable that effective mensures should be taken by the Chinese gov ernment to prevent the Illicit Impor tation and sale of morphia, and es pecially It Is desirable that Japan, following the example of other na tions, should prohibit the export of morphia to China. Prohibition drives man and woman to the use of cocaine, morphine, opium and other drugB, according to Dr. Hamilton K. Wright, one of the three United States commissioners to the International Opium Congress. Dr. Wright declnres ho has found the drug habit to be advanced fur ther In those state having strict antl llnuor laws, while In the "wet" states the reverse Is the caso. Dr. Wright said that, contrary to the general belief, the Chinese users of the drug and the opium-eaters both are anxious to see tho law en forced as to Its sale, while the Chin ese "pipers" are strong advocates of total abstinence from the drug for the rising generation. Ills Informa tion as to the white users of opium not as aennue on account of the greater difficulty In locating them. nr. wrignt declares there linn been Btoady Increase in importation of opium into the United States Blnce 1873, though there was a larger Chi nese population then than now and the laws against its importation were not so severe. Tho Importation of the crude pro duct in the past five yenrs has in creased 1,000.000 pounds, he says. The Chinese physicians, ho de clares, are lenders In tho effort to find cure for the opium habit. They are now using a cure discovered not long ago in Shanghai, nnd they claim for It success. The new cure Is he- Ing tested officially In New York. Dr. Wright s studies have develon. id that fifty per cent of tho Chinese n the United States habitually uhc no urug, ;iu per cent occasionally, loarly 20 per cent on rare occasions md a few refrain from lis use. Sev-mty-flve por cent of the opium brought Into tho Hulled States Is made Into morphine and 90 xr cent of Hint drug is Bold Illicitly, accord ing to Dr. Wright. the breeding ranks It appears like dropping back Into the times of th Dark Ages for the government of th united States to attempt to create new standard of the American type. The "standard type" horse Is THE typical American product. He can be depended upon under any and all circumstances. He Is naturally "hustler," and haB an Inherited de sire to finish In front. To use a com mon expression, he has more "horse sense" than any other animal ever created. He Is game to the core will last longer and pull larger loads In proportion to his weight, than any other breed of horses. Sucb be! the case there appears no necessity fur spending thousands of dolla and totally wasting and disregarding the many years of Intelligent matl and crossing which has been neces sary to produce the standard bred of today." "The popular type of the driving horse Btands nrteen bands, three inches high, Mid will weigh from lOf.O to 1100 poundB, carries a high head, with a good, clean Bet of legs. sound feet, well timed body, and nice, smooth action. In disposition, the standard bred horse, or American driving horse easily asserts his supremacy. No an mal ever created, unless it be a well trained dog, exhibits the degree of Intelligence shown by these horses. Like the i,t.,er Qualifications, this trait can be Improved upon, or made worse, by the mating with desirable or undesirable stallions, and the careful and successful breeder gives uue importance to this qualification 'The condition of the breeding in dustry was never so favorable aa at the present time. The demand Ib great, the prices are good, It Ib only necessary mat tne production be u to the standard. Oregon Is making ranm Birides along every 1 ne. and her advancement In numbers an quality tne great American driving norne m mny up to thai or any oth line or industry.
