CITY OF AHIILANI) HAS 14-M1LL TAX LEV Y. Medford, With 17 Mills Under High License, Wonders What It will be Under Prohibition. Roseburg taxpayers, who are pon dering over the Increase this month In the city tax levy from 3 mills to 10 mills, on account of the lost of $8000 a year In Buloon licenses, may console themselvec with tbe know lodge that In Ashland and Medford the tar levies are still higher. The Medford Tribune (wet) of Dec. 25, says: As the result of prohibition, the tax levy for th) city of Ashland has been jumped foi the com(ng year from C mills to 14 mills. There Is at present a deficit of over $5000 In the Ashland finances, due to tbe loss of revenue from high license during the paBt year, and both this deficiency and the current expenses must be met by Increased taxation, so the Ashland council at Its meeting Wednesday evening fixed the levy at 14 mlllB only three and a half mills less than Medford's with Its provisions for tak ing caro of the now water system bond Interest, street Intersection pavements and its big program of municipal Improvements., 1-ant Year's Tax 0 Mills. When tho Ashland council last year fixed the tax levy at 6 mills it was done in a spirit of bravado, to prove to the world that prohibition did not Increase taxation, and the example of Ashland was freely quot ed throughout the state in the local option election- of last June. But who dances, even to prohibition music, must pay the piper and, in spite of the utmost economy, a do flclency of $5000 rolled up during the year. This and current expenses must be mot, and the only way to meet it was to raise the tax levy 133 per cent which has been done. Had Ashland voted for high license the levy would not have to be In creased, for the $5000 to $8000 a year from Ilcen:-,e8 would have sup. piled the deficiency. And now peo pie of Medford are wondering what the tax levy will be here If the reven ue from licenses Is lost through pro hibition carrying the city In January. If It Is 17 Mi mills with license, what will it be without? Medicine That Is Medicine. "I have suffered a good deal with malaria and stomach complaints, but I have now found a remedy that keeps me well, and that remedy Is Electric Bitters; a medicine that Is a medicine for stomach and liver trou bles, and for run down conditions," says W. C. Keister, of Halllday, Ark , hlloctric Bitters purify and enrich the 'jlood, tone up the nerves, and Impart vigor and energy to the weak.
