Corporations Also Aid, Holding Such i.ourse to ix t'licuiicr Than Paying Extortions. PITTSBURG. Pa.. Dec. 27. Presl dent Roosevelt Is "the man behind' the Pittsburg councilmanic graft ex posure. This fact was admitted to night by Rev. Dr. J. Leonard Levey, vice-president of tbe Voters' Civic League. Roosevelt, according to Dr. Levey, acted In response to a personal call two weeks ago from a committee of officials of the voters' league. On the same train with members of the committee who had called on the president came six national bank ex aminers to this city sent at the president's request to aid in the brib ery "cleanup." It is said the presi dent offered to send a siiecial proBe cuter here, as be did to San Fran cisco, but this was not found neces sary. In Attorney David Watson, a close friend of the president, Roose velt thinks the probers have the best legal talent In the country. That Mr. Roosevelt Iff interested in the Voters' league Is indlcnted from the fact that In an incredibly short time the machinery of the Fed eral government was in motion. In less than a week after the arrival here of the bank examiners the arrest of the seven councllmen and two for mer bankers was brought about. And this is to be but the beginning of ultra-sensational moves. A sensational story Is going the rounds today that the Pennsylvania Railroad and other big Industrial and financial interests are also back of the councilmanic bribery expose. It was said that corporations were pur. to such an expense in getting through any legislation for improve ment and extensions that they decid ed it would be cheaper to Bpend aj large sum in ousting all the grafters than it would be to pay them their price. It Is said the Pennsylvania Rail road within the coming year hnB some great Improvements planned, permission to complete which will re quire ordinances to be put through the city councils. Examine the construction of a Bush and Lane piano and you will readily understand why they guar antee them for twenty years. dtf SINCE 1877 SOUTHERN OREGON. im i i vm VII I v 11 Cottage Grove Heads Move ment For New County EDCENE TAKES BROAD VIEW Boundary Mapped Oat Takes Id Drain, Yoncalla and Gardiner From This County Needs Kol " Looked Alter EUGENE, Or., Dec. 27. A move ment has been art on foot by the peo ple of Cottage Grove to form a new county with that city as the county seat. It is proposed that the lino should cross the Middle Fork of the Mc Kenzio, run near Goshtn and thence west to the present boundary of the county. .This would leave the lllue River Mining country in Lane, while the present Bohemia district, In both Lane and Douglas, would be included within the boundaries of the new county. from the Bohemia district in Douglas the line would run west to the coast and Include within the lim its of the proposed Bohemia county the towns of Yoncalla, Drain and Gardiner, all of which are at present In Douglas county. KiiKeiie 1" Willing. Commenting upon this movement. the Eugene Guard says: The people who have dtsctisRCd the new move believe that a division Is inevitable, If not during the coming year at least in less than four years. They think that both the people at uoseimrg and here In Eugene would readily give up a part of their coun ties to them. The only difficulty they seem to apprehend is the location of the new boundaries.- Rather than fight for the division. as the people of Hood River did, they with lo conciliate both Douglas and Lane county people, . and for that matter have bronrhed the subject to a number of Eugene people. Busi ness men at Cottnge Grove want the help of Eugene Influence, and pur pose to arrange an amicable agree ment between Cottage Grove and Eu gene business nu n. With the help of (he representa tives of Lane county ard Douglas county they think the divLon cm easily be made In the next legislat ure, and that there will bu no need to attempt the Inltlr.J e. The great betterment that Is ex pected is in the administration of the district affected. It Is said that with a smnller executive distrct much better roads would he built In all three districts and that greater at tention would be paid to the vital In terests of the district. The name for the new county has not yet been decided upon, but In ense a unit is formed It would prob ably be Bohemia. TWO TKACI'H NEAR MYRTLE ( REEK HELL KOH 00,000.
