It la scarcely short of astonlxhlng that the street paving movement came so near being killed outright during the session of the city council . Monday night. Whether so realized by the councllmen or not, the attempt to change all the plans at this critical Juncture and reopen the way to end less huggllng over the kind of pave ment to be laid, Is the very scheme that Is being worked by the opio- nenu of any kind of paving being .; done and Is their most effectual wea pen ror killing the movement entirely There has been altogether too much haggling already, and The Kevlew sincerely believes that Hoseburg has already lost more than f:u,ul)u which Is the total of the proposed bond Issue by not getting the pav ing work started last fall, bb planned. The councllmen who opposed the bona issue should let the fact none trate their minds that the peoplo of IloBeburg are decidedly la ravur of street puving and are not In any mood to stand any further "rag chewing" over the several kinds of pavement proponed. The contract agreed upon last fall was for the same kind of paving that Is being laid In Kunono, flalem and Medford, and the price was less per square yard Uian Is being paid In any of those places. Therefore there is no argument to be offered on the ques ; tlon of economy. TheBo other towns have tried tho bltullthlc pavement and are so well pleased that they are putting In more of It JiiBt as fast as they can get It done, and are pay ing more for It than tho Kosehurg contract specifies. Full credit should be given to those councllmen and the mayor who stood for and" dually put through the paving ordinance Mon day night. Those who opposed It are being widely and vigorously condemned. 1IEAN HAH NOT WlTMMtA VN Eugono Guard: Today's Oregon Ian contains a column article In which It is state thnt Louis K. lean, of this city, haB given up the fight for tho speakership of tho next house of representatives In the Oregon leg islature. Mr. Bean, when Interview ed upon tho subject by a (luiird re porter this morning, was emphatic in his denial of the truth of tho story. Ho Bald: "There Is absolutely nothing In it whatovor. I haven't withdrawn and have no Intention of doing so. I am still In the race for the speakprshlp and Intend to Btay in until It Is Dual ly determined." In regard to that portion of the Oregonlan article stating that Mr. lloan agreed. In return for the sup port of the standpatters, to give them the chairmanship of a third of the house committees, he Bnld: "That Is en absoluto lie. I have never prom ised anything In the way of chalr mnnshlis or anything of the kind whatever. I am in favor of the 'forty' caucus and in my Judgment It will be seru red. I am working In the Interest of tho caucus and fully expect that every Republican In the house, will go Into the caucus." A MOW MKAT KOH TIIH MILLIONS. On the contrary, they poHHctHned a number of excellent trults that tho tamo hovincH lacked. When ti heel-llv, that tormenter of white fHres' and 'loiiKhorna," buzzed about a buffalo, tho latter tucked hl feet under him, lay complacently hewliiu IiIh cud, and let Mr. Heel-fly buzz. When a puck of In boa came looking for a succulent buffalo cnlf, they seldom got one. Kor the wild herd was siunrt enough to bivouac In aiiv.h a manner that the hnblen might bo protected. Tho little ones woro withered together at the center of tho camp-ground. Tho mothers set tled down In a circle that enclosed their progeny. And another and out er circle was formed by the watchful fathers. (All of which proved that a buffalo had better Instinct, or reason, bun a Bteur.) And buffaloes were heavier than cattle, having fourteen ribs In place of thirteen, but a smal ler weight of viscera. They were doubly lons-llved. Moreover, on a K I veil quantity of gra.(ng-land, a largo number of them could live well, while the sumo number of cattle would drop weight and take to use- loss wandering. For killing, tho buffaloes, owing to the fact that they had never been used as beasts of burden, possessed cellular tissues of fat like that or other wild cattle, and their tlesh was hotter marbled than tho best hoof-hrcds of domestic, herds or, In oilier words, there were no al ternating muscular streaks of lean and fat hi their carcasses, which harncterlxe animals that have been iiRod for working purposes through- tut general urns. hen hung, they produced excellent meat, and enough fat for good eating but less tallow, by one hundred poundH, than a steer two-thirds the size. And lastly, they possessed a hump, provided with tfcml-llcsh and fat, upon which their system drew for nutriment 'nt a pinch. So thnt. In periods of drought. or when food was scarce, buffaloes could go both hungry and thliHty for a considerable length of time and still retain their thriftluess. And as for the ordinary cold that could inako a bunch of steers miserable, thev paid small attention to It. They took a storm 'front on,' ltko a gntlnnt ship, letting the wind tug nt the nat ural nubias with which nature had endowed them and flutter the long, thick hair of their ragged pantaloons. "Now. (.oodnlght, the cattleman, set these cent rn -cat tie and pro-buffalo obesrvatlou up against each other, and saw that If. by cross breeding, he could add to the cattle tho desirable qualities of the buffalo, he won hi have a new hybrid that might possess the host traits of both. louhtless the problem would never have occurred to an ordinary rattle ninn. Hut, as James Adair, the cap italist, had Judged, the former path finder and scout was not an ordinary cattleman." Medicine That Is Medicine, "I hnve suffered a good deal with malaria and stomach complaints, but I have now found a remedy that keeps me welL, and that remedy Is Flee trie Hitters; a medicine that Is a medicine for stomach and liver trou bles, and for run down conditions," says W. The season for coughs and colds is now at hand and too much care can not be used to protect tho children. A child is much more likely to con tract diphtheria or scarlet fever when he has a cold. The quicker you cure his cold the less tho risk. Chamber lain's Cough Remedy Is Ihe sole re liance of many mothers, and few of those who have tried It are willing to use any other. Mrs. F. F. Starcher of Kipley, W. Va., says: "I have never used anything other than Chamberlain's Cough Remedy for my children and it has alwayN given good satisfaction." This remedy contains no opium or other narcotic and may be given as confidently to a child as to an adult. For asle by Hamilton Drug Co.
