Gets "23" Sign From New Head of Venezuela WARNED NEVER TO RETURN Letter of Credit Cancelled Gomez . Now Acting President, With Sew Cabinet Special to the Evening Review. BERLIN, Dec. 23. Clprlano Cas tro, the deposed president of Vene zuela, was thrown into a furious rage today upon receiving by cable a copy of the proclamation of Gomez, the acting president, announcing that he had been overthrown and warning him that his property will be confis cated, and that if he attempts to re turn to Venezuela he will be arrested on the charge of embezzling public funds. The proclamation is signed by eighty prominent citizens, and marks the end of Castro's rule in Venezuela. Castro, the dictator, who has gov erned the republic with a rod of iron ever since he took forcible posses sion of the Yellow House In Caracas In 1899 is now openly charged with conspiracy to encompass the assassin ation of the man whom he left at the head of the republic when he said away on November 23 from La Guyra, nominally to secure skilled medical aid in Berlin for a malady of long standing, and is today thorough ly discredited. The Bank of Venezuela has cabled Its correspondents ,at Berlin and at Paris cancelling the unlimited letter of, credit given to Senor Castro when he left Venezuela for Europe and no one In Caracas believes he will ever dare return to the capital. The Castro cabinet has been forced to resign and s new and progressive ministry has Guard IT. 8. Interests, WASHINGTON, Dec. 23. A Merry Christmas to you one and all, my dear members of our dioces an family. At this Joyous season my heart goes out in loving greeting to all our clergy and laity, to the ralih ful In active city parish, to friends without the diocese, to the patient and sometimes discouraged workers In our distant missions, to ranchers far away who can have no opportun ity to make their Christmas cominun lous, to our Auxiliary women, and the dear children, to the occasional worshiper with us, and also to those baptized and confirmed members of our Father's family who rarely, if ever, "praise God in the congrega tion;" to all may God In abund ance give the cheer and consolations of the Christmas truth. How all thoughts of self, of our successes and failures, of the indifference of friends, of the unresponsiveness of fellow workers, of false judgments of our actions, and misinterpretations of our motives, take to themselves wings and fly away, and our hearts glow with Joy and love when we meditate on the marvel of, the In carnation, on the great wonder-of the Isove of God. The world apart from Christ gives us no adequate assur ance that God is Love, although Rob ert Browning has taught us to say "He that created love, shall He not love?" But that GOD IS LOVE it Is this that our Lord GUARANTEES. It Is this love which furnishes the motive power to carry out the object of the Incarnation expressed In the command of Christ "As the Father hath sent me, even so send I you." The call of the Incarnation to you and me is personal and complete. We are asked to INVEST OURSELVES. Tbe motive, after all, which must move the Church, is not proportion ate giving or systematic giving, pleas for money, . various incitements to duty, or the crying qeeds of heathen at home or the heathen abroad. It is the example and direct command of the Incarnate Lord. The "as" and the so of that command are equal. His coming Into the world cost Him poverty, persecution, agony and cru- sifixion. He gripped the world by renouncing It, and we must continue and complete His work as His com missioned ones, for He Invests us with the same program of renuncia tion, and the same promise of victory. I call upon you, dear people, to IN VEST YOURSELVES, body, soul and mind In the service of our Incarnate Master; then there will be no "mis sionary problem" and no lack of means for Church support. The In carnation of the Son of God Is not a speculation of the understanding. It is incomparably the greatest fact in the whole history of our race, and as such ft imposes on us correspond ing moral duties, so that It is no ex aggeration to say, "Were the whole realm of nature mine, That were an offspring far too small; Love, so amazing, so Divine, Demands my soul, my life, my all." Affectionately, Your Bishop and fellow-servant in the Lord, CHARLES SC ADDING. Bishop of Oregon. XEAK-I.EER FIXE PAID. PENDLETON, Or., Dec. 22.
