Doc. 11 Oovornor Chamberlain, Joe Teal and lifnger Hfcrnianu, accompanied by the Orogon congressmen, had a con Ter ence today with Chairman Burton, of the river and harbor committee. Mr. Teal said that Oregon wanted a 30-foot channel from Portland to the sea. Mr. Burton said he could not see the advantage of a channel of this depth until there Is a perman ent depth of 30 feet on the bar at the mouth of the river. Mr. Teal also said that Oregon wanted a liberal appropriation for the Columbia river and coast harbors. He said that as between Coos Bay and Tillamook harbor, appropriations should be given to Coos Bay, If but one project was to be recognized. Mr. Hermann said he wrh here to represent the towns on the Coqulllo River and asked for the full amount recommended by the engineers for that stream. Mr. Burton told the Oregon men that It was by no means certain there would he a river and harbor bill this year, as he question ed whether the conditions of the treasury would warrant It. Representative Hawley has Intro duced a bill extending tbo provisions of the Indian war pension act to sur vivors of the Bannock war of 1878-9. GET DHAYIjOAI) OK BOOZK. There aeema to be no letup in the matter of food reform, and we are having a veritable outpouring of Indi vidual views and cxperleueea on the subject Even the doctors, moat con servative of men, have caught the Id fectlon aud are prescribing gruunse, bruinose, nut tone aud all those queei looking sawdust; and blotting papery sort of things that seem to suggest the need of a dustpan, but are really, don't you know, the very thing your over worked and weakened digestive system may be requiring! Thene are the days when the ad vanced diet reformers are boasting that they are living and living well, mind you on sixpence a day. They uiuke their breakfast off a cup of pat ent diet food, lunch on a nut meat or two and dine on a concoction of vege table Juices, with a banana perhaps for a Jolly and acceptable dessert. These are the estimable folk who hurry past a butcher's shop with averted faces and a look of profound disgust. There are not a grcnt many of them, but they are very radical. Such are the Ilalgltes, the Pletcherltes, the Kuatace MlleslmiH and the disciples of a dosen other mod ern food reformers. The slmon pure Halglte turns faint If be sees you eat ing a pea, the Kletchertte wants you to chew on a mouthful until nothing re mains and to be satisfied with that, end, as for the Eustace Milesian, he almply pities you If he discovers you eating anything you really like. L Stephens Successor to Psrrot Bros Eicluilv Sho Dealer $3.00 $5.00 Next Door to Postoffic Be It noted also that' the business of food reform has been confined princi pally to the mule side of humanity. The women have not committed them selves to It with the eagerness with which they embrace moat fads. In the matter of diet women are the great conservative force. Perhaps It Is because they are compelled, by clr cumstntices to see so much of food that they are so Indifferent. To get rid of the whole tiresome subject is the chief form of relaxation that many of them seek. It would be an absurdity to ex pect women to take, the lead la re forming the national diet The fact is that very few women care for food as food. When It Is for themselves It quite singularly falls to Interest them. Their business It wouldn't be quite correct to cull It theft pleasure is to prepare It for consumption. Really refined women seem never to know ex actly what they are eating. Single women living by themselves practical ly do not eat at all. These latter are the ones who become food reformers, and they are so In order that they may forswear eating altogether. When a married woman turns food reformer It may be set down as a fact that her domestic life Is not a happy one, nor will her conversion tend to make tt less delectable. The average married woman 1b wise enough to know all this. It Is not from the ranks of the married women that the femi nine food reformers come. They are recruited for the most part from sln glo women who cure ho little about food that they are quite ready to ex periment with It A 8hopping Lunch ton.
