EUGENE "BOOZE" CASES. Joe Jacobs Gets Lliult Again Fines Imposed on Others. Eugene, (Or.) Guard," Dec. 9: Joe Jacobs, the Charnelton street mer chant, who a few days ago was given the maximum sentence of 30 days in jail and a fine of $500 for violating the local option law and is now serv ing the sentence in the county jail, was again given the limit by Judge Harris in the circuit court this morn ing, he having pleaded guilty to a Becond indictment against him. This makes fines aggregating $1000 against him and he will have to serve 60 days in jail. AKfd Man Klncd -. Charley (J. T.) Witter, who, for merly ran a saloon in Eugene, later, being engaged in ihe eame business at Springfield and afterward running a "blind pig" there, according to his plea of guilty entered this morning, was arrested last evening on the charge of violating the local option law. He .was brought up tor sen tence this morning. Judge Harris stated that inasmuch as Witter had gone out of the business and had been out since last April and as he was neither directly or Indirectly in terested In the business at the pres ent time and on account of his old age 76 years he was Inclined to be lenient and fixed his fine at szbu. Witter stated to the Judge that he was entirely out of the business and expected to stay out. As he accom panied his attorney, L,. unyeu, out 01 the courtroom, he burst into tears, eliciting the - Sympathy of the on lookers. Witter was always a law- abiding citizen as a saloonkeeper, but Ike many others, ne Kept on selling liquor after the local option law went Into effect. Smyth Fined IOO. W. H. Smvth. who had entered a plea of guilty to the charge of selling liquor In Eugene, was sentenced to pay a fine of $.100. Pony Witter, son of Charley Witter, was sentenced to 30 days in the county jail on me same charge. Grand Jury Quits Till rvnruary.
