The Best Way to Boost Is to Eatiih UmIi Industries. Roseburg, Ore.. Dec. 9, 1 90f Kdltor Review: I ace in your paper that Mr. Joh Welsh was here In the Interest of company that is iookliiK into lh prospects for a fruit cannery belli built here. I think it is almost th universal opinion that a cannery badly needed In Koseburg. Talk about boosting the way to boost town Is to get In and do somothlng That will show the people that we mean business as well ua talk busl nous. I have talked with severa persons who are very anxious to know what 1b going to be done abou building a cannery. One mnn said that If he was sure a cannery would be bunt he would put out a thousau Royal Anne and Ding cherry trees this winter. Another said he would take a contract to furnish 1000 bush els or tomatoes at 60 cents per bushel. Another man said he was on a deal for a six-acre tract of land I00 per acre, and that he would have no hesitation in closing the deal If he knew there would be a cannery built here. Still another said he could buy good hill land, set It ou to strawberries and pay for it with the first crop. He could do this, even at $150 per acre, if there was a can nery horo. He Baid it was un hi business raising berries and shipping Ihem to Portland, tor the express charges and the commission men generally got away with the biggest pari ot the proceeds. When 1 was In Illinois a few years ago i visited a cannery at Kin-oka, and was much Interested In the way It was operated. The company had 1800 acres of Bweet corn of their own and had contracted for about 2.- 000 acres more, besides what tnmn tocB, peas, beans find other thlngfe tney worked on. They were work Ing on corn when 1 wns there. The corn was hauled In Just as It was picaea and about zr persons were buBy husking and silking It. Theu It was sent on an endless chain ele vator to tho top of the building where It wbb cooked and removed from the cob, pnssed down to the lowor lloor. put Into cans and sealed up at the rato of about B0 every min ute. Thus they hnndled about .1600 cans per hour, or 36,000 per day ol ion nourB. Now, suppose Roseburg had such a cannery as that. Don t you think that would booHt ionic? It would lurnlHh work for 100 to MO hands, saying nothing about those it would take to raise tho fruit, berries and vegetablcB to supply the cannery. I know some of the old moss-barks will say it la too big an undertaking ana we can I do It. Why not? I am told there Is moro than $500,000 deposited in tho threo Itosehrg bunks, and It would take only n very small percent of thnt amount to build and equip a cannery large enough to work up all our surplus iruii ana- oerries and oilier products that would bo raised. I have heard It reported that the Sulhorlln Land and Water Co. are negotiating with parties In regard to putting In a ran. aery. They could do nothing ala.- hat would boost thulr enterprise any more, nut mere is plenty of room for a cannery at Roseburg also, and plenty of innterlnl to work on. As Roseburg in tho near futuro Is nound to bo tho railroad center of woutnern Oregon, the moro manu factures we can start tho betler II will be for us. There Is no doubt that there will be an electric remd built from Koseburg to Cooa Hay In a very few years, and It makes no dif ference wnciher it Is built on the oies valley route or via Myrtle Point, It is sure to come to Hose burg anyway. So let us get to work and build a cannery, liullil k,mhI rouil anil mve l In- atm-M. Theu when peo pie come to look at this country we will have something to nttraet their attention. We could double the pop ulation of Roseburg and the entire valley every live or six yen, lor we have Iho best of rltmnte, soil tliut will produce everything in abundance and the purest water and air. All we want la iminiirRctnrlca to work up what Is produced and then we will see Douglas County forgo ahead as aho has never done before. I.. 'I'. THOMPSON. ADVKIITIHIMJ COMMITTEE.
