Soon af ter graduating from the V. of O. a little mote than six years ago. Mr. Giirroll departed for Amoy, China, where for about Ave years he was a teacher In the leading school there. This school Is exclusively for Chinese noys, the restrictions of caste for bidding mixed schools for both boys and girls in that country, lloth na tive and foreign teachers are em ployed there, but the school is con ducted In tho Kngllsh language. They are especially good In geography and history and master mathematics with out great difficulty, some going Into algebra and geometry with success They generally learn to write fair ly well and nre ablo to compose and write good business letters In Eng lish. Upon graduation there are numerous positions open to them In Hie rustoniB jind postal service of their own country or as clerks and managers or business enterprises. In this school upwards of 300 pupils nre enrolled during the yenr, and the dally attendance often reaches 250. Desiring a rest from school work. Mr. (iorrell entered the employ of the Standard Oil Co. In the Orient and was stationed at Hong Kong for seven months. I.Ike other Chinese cities Its streets are only from six to l."i feet wide, very crooked, and there Is no regular system of blocks, ns In American cities. They have no sewage systems mid the filth Is sim ply Indescribable. In consequence the dentil rate Is something enor mous. American trade with China con sists mainly of flour and kerosene oil. Some chenp cotton fabrics are sent there but that branch of trade Is more largely controlled by Germany and other Kuropean countries. As Americans, except the missionaries, are forbidden to live In the Interior of China, the advance of trade there with Is not very rapid. Mr. Correll has not yet announced any definite plnns for the future but he will not return to China.
