After an absence of six years In
China, OHcar Oorrell, a Douglas
county boy, was (greeting old friends
in Koseourg mis morning. Soon af
ter graduating from the V. of O. a
little mote than six years ago. Mr.
Giirroll departed for Amoy, China,
where for about Ave years he was a
teacher In the leading school there.
This school Is exclusively for Chinese
noys, the restrictions of caste for
bidding mixed schools for both boys
and girls in that country, lloth na
tive and foreign teachers are em
ployed there, but the school is con
ducted In tho Kngllsh language. Mr.
' tiorri'll relates some very interesting
I expert cb In bringing these boys to
u nut.wjfiiKe ui now 10 speaa, reau
and wrlto the KngllKh language.
They nre, of course, started In a niul
primitive way. but In tho full course
of seven years they usually niastor
the regular branches Included In the
public schools of this country, ns
well as some of the more important
of tho high school studies. After once
getting started they show a wonder
ful nptltudo In memorizing the var
ious Kngllsh branches taught. They
are especially good In geography and
history and master mathematics with
out great difficulty, some going Into
algebra and geometry with success
They generally learn to write fair
ly well and nre ablo to compose and
write good business letters In Eng
lish. Upon graduation there are
numerous positions open to them In
Hie rustoniB jind postal service of
their own country or as clerks and
managers or business enterprises. In
this school upwards of 300 pupils nre
enrolled during the yenr, and the
dally attendance often reaches 250.
Desiring a rest from school work.
Mr. (iorrell entered the employ of
the Standard Oil Co. In the Orient
and was stationed at Hong Kong for
seven months. Ills health fulling In
that hot cllmntc he was transferred
back to Amoy by the company. As
his health failed to Improve satisfact
orily he resigned from the service of
the Standard Oil Co. some months
later and departed for home, doing
over he went via San Francisco and
Honolulu and returning ho ennio by
the northern route, lauding first nt
Victoria, H. C, and thence to Seattle,
lie visited Japan both going nnd re
turning, spending a few days In that
country on tho way over.
Amoy. Including only the walled
city, hns about 95.0(10 Inhabitants,
hut In tho city grouped outside the
walls are upwards of 100.000 more.
Canton, about SO miles by steamer
from Hong Kong, up the l'enrl river.
Is a walled city of upwards of 2,
noo.ooo people. I.Ike other Chinese
cities Its streets are only from six to
l."i feet wide, very crooked, and
there Is no regular system of blocks,
ns In American cities. They have no
sewage systems mid the filth Is sim
ply Indescribable. In consequence
the dentil rate Is something enor
mous. American trade with China con
sists mainly of flour and kerosene oil.
Some chenp cotton fabrics are sent
there but that branch of trade Is
more largely controlled by Germany
and other Kuropean countries. As
Americans, except the missionaries,
are forbidden to live In the Interior
of China, the advance of trade there
with Is not very rapid.
Mr. Correll has not yet announced
any definite plnns for the future but
he will not return to China. He re
tnrneir to Oakland this afternoon to
spend Thanksgiving with his mother
and brother, Frank Oorrell.
