What a I'Vw M-n Did in Hunting Mrdford'K rroHiierlly. Col. E. Hofer, of Halem, la a well known liooator for Oregon, but here la a portion of an article which re: contly ni)ieared in hla paper, the Capital Journal, following a trip to Mmlford: The writer has been at many booHtor conventions, lie has held hotalr fextlvals In nearly all the principal cities of western Oregon but never did he run into such speci fic caloric that makes a community get up and hump and double up its real estate values like the ones that struck Modford. Of course, all un derstand that tho booster city of the Kokuo Itlver vnlley has been on all the United Htates ninpa printed In the pnHt few years in box car IntterB but few people know who did It It was the Modford bunch that din covered Ilarrlnian In his lodgo al I'ollcnn nay, and broke the Ice thai surrounded him for miles and then swam through It with an Invitation in their teeth, asking the "Old Man of the Financial Mountain," to coinn and sue thorn. He did stop a few hours, and Dr. Iteddy. took him In too, with hiB 40-horsepowor Thomap l'lynr, and when he got through Ilnrrlman turned and said to the crowd and said: "Reddy is the great est booster I ever met. He men tioned everything under tho sun at produced In tho Rogue River valley except tin." Then Itcddy produced some tin ore out of I) Is pocket and gave llarrlninn n piece with an assay attached, signed, sealed and sworn to. The next time Harrlman rami this summer he stnyed three hourt and would have stnyed all day ex cept for tho modesty of tho Merloni bunch. They wore afrnld of over doing it with the old man of I Ik mountain. After he waB gono they regretted they dUl not koep him ovei night. Thoy got hold of Honore Palmer nnd young Vilas and gav them tho time of tholr liven and each one hnB been the menus of large In vestments being mado In orchards. Young Palmer got his mlllonalri maiunin to come through nnd niuki tho Hogue River valley her siimiuei homo Btole the danio (bo fair tt look upon from a real estate stand point) bodily from Uugone on prom Ibo to rotum her after aho had seer tho bottom of hor purse. She lilev horaolf for $165,000 worth of Med ford orchnrds, and would have dom as much moro but for tho llunncinl squoozo. Who Are the llum-li. Of course, there Is tho premier, entitled to stand nt tho head of tin list Dr. J. V. Itcddy, mayor of tin city, lighter for new Ideas, landlord of tho Nash House, about which I muHt say a little more further on. John I). Olwell, first orchnrdiHt and organizer of the ind stry as a fnctm of Southern Oregon development; Dr. C. It. Itny, of the electric powoi company, and his brother, Col. Frank Ray; J. 10. ICnyurt, banker; W. I. Vnwter, banker; Edgar llafer, the box factory man; J. M. Keene, den tint nnd all-around booster or Month em Oregon, who takes ittiuttti fot break rest, ents It for lunch am1 dines on It, grows rich, rat and hnp py; Jeff Heard, new manager of tin Bterllng gold mine; tleo. Putnam, who runs the redhottest little dally In seven stnteg and has libel suiti and imprisonment for contempt ni often na tho courts meet; Judge Wlthlngton, who la legal adviser of tho hotalr artists nnd Pres. W. M. Colvlg. I do not know whore you would find 11 men who are such concentra ted geyserH of information aa these are, hut Medford has many more llko them, and is educating them every day. These men are pioneers and have grown worso as they go along. A Pioneer rvliiirdit. Hon. J. H. Htewart Is no more but he la entitled to the grnteful inemor of all who love to recount the haltlcx for the upbuilding and transforma tion of Oregon. He was a pioneer, a progressive man. a builder of or chards, lie built one of 7fi acres 36 miles up the Rogue River that few persona have seen. He was an Illinois man and was succeeded b his son, who Is a chip off the old block. These men have lived to set orchards they planted aell for $:1MH). then for I'll. Olio, and then sell for 100.000. They have bought and sold some of these themselves and have mndc some of this money slid kept It. It Is not often that the mnn who sows so wisely also reaps the crop, but J. II. Stewart planted wiser than he dreamed of and hla on is following with still larger enterprises. . The Three lllg Varieties. The big cash bumper crops have fixed things so that about all that la planted are the Newton pippins and Spltxenberg apples, and Cornice pears. There are others nearly as good that make big money, but these are the best. John Wesley Perkins, now of Roseburg. got the first record crop of golden Cornice peara. and they sold In New York for tabuloua prices, and even got Into the White House and Hennte through Sena tor Hourne, who distributed hund reds of boxes of Ihem to advertise Oregon. What did they do? Well, J ","'"' 'tt" for I35UU originally. Perkins had tho nerve to pay $21,500 for it and he has Bold it to Seattle people for $80,000, uml they took $40,000 worth of fruit off it this year. De Ilart, the Portland hardware map. bougtit a pear and apple orchard for $10,000 a few years ago and haa Just sold it for $;i.ri,000. The own ers are building line bungalows ncHtllng snugly In brown-leaved kl- monas of oak grovcu and taking almost tiie price of their gold mine out of It every year In crops that In crease each year. And mingled with It, with the wagons hauling the best fruit crops to town are wagon loads of fine coal taken out of the mines In the foothills just back of the orchardB. Fred Perkins off 19 acres of pears this year took $19,000 and the check was publiBhed In fac simile. A real estate man on the atreet cor ner waB telling a man on the atreet corner in my hearing of 40 acres this year yielding- $46,000, or 145,000 net, and prepared to show him the expense and shipping books. Fifteen hundred dolara an acre was refused for tho Dillon Hill pear orchard OiIh fall. It Is 160 acres, or nearly quarter of a million. Something to Talk About. Here is something to think about for the Bluggards of tho Willamette valley, where the soil is Just as good for apples and peurs as Medford Nearly a quarter of a million for a quarter section. -Pear trees on that farm Just beginning to bear, seven years old from the planting, nnd growing better every year. Thia land will never be sold for Ichb than $2,000 an acre, and the syndicates are already forming to take It In. Why shouldn't Medford boom when It has been the work of the boosters there to reveal the possibilities of that sort of fruit growing. ANSWKIM KVU1IY CAM.. ItoseliurK People Have 1 Tills Is True. Reading horticultural comnilsslon literature pertaining to the state ot Oregon, or having even a passing knowledge of the fact of which this literature treats, there Is no escape from the conviction that the Oregon apple man have every reason to be satisfied with what be has done and what he expectB to do. Take the statement of Horticultural Commis sioner Carson ot the third horticul tural district, andwe have a compre hensible summary of the Oregon ap ple man's felicitation. Mr. Carson asks: "If there is any competition between Oregon fruit and the fruit of the east, why is it that the east ern fruitgrowers sell a barrel of their best quality apples, containing two and one-half bushels for less than Oregon growers sell a Bingle box containing one bushel? " The Oregon apple men has been aware for some time that there is no possible competition between the fruit of the two sections. The fancy prices he has received for his apples in London and European markets, to say nothing of New York, has been the assurance of the superiority of Oregon fruits. This one fact, more pronouncedly perhaps than any oth er, has established Oregon's reputa tion aB the land ot the apple. The Oregon apple man has profited by it boyond any other apple man In the country, as his bank account will show. And their is opportunity In tho state for a multiplication ot his tribe. We may safely say that the culti vation of this one staple fruit will al ways be one ot its chief industries of the Btate. In Its future there 1b an almost Inconceivable warranty of wealth to the state, and of profit and content to the Individual. The Ore gon apple, if properly presented is one of the strongest inducements for emigration among the western home seeking people of the East. Evening Telegram. Plan to Prevent Cha -ibi-rlulu Being Klected to I'. S. Senate. PORTLAND, Or.. Nov. 6. Sup ported by an organization now form ing, Senator C. V. Fulton will at tempt to prevent Governor George B. Chamberlain from being elected to tho United States Senate, to Hill the vai aney caused by the retire ment of Fulton, March 4. There are enough Statement No. 1 members of tho Legislature to elect Chamberlain If they keep their pledges, but efforts are being made to Induce a suffi cient number to prevent the election of Chambe; lain. The argument of Fulton and his followers is that the Legislature should elect a Republican to the Sen ate instead of a Democrat. Al though Chamberlain defeated Cake, who defeated Fulton in the pri maries, for the popular vote, the Ful ton people assert that when Taft carried Oregon it proved that the people repudiated their votes of last June for the Democrat. Various methods of bringing about the defeat of Chamberlain are under discussion. One plan favorably con sidered is. to have the Republicans in the counties whl'h did not go for Chamberlain to prepare a petition urging their Senators and Represen tatives to vote for a Republican. The supposition Is that Fulton may be selected In the event- of Chamber lain being turned down, although the name of Theodore B. Wilcox and others have been mentioned as the possible beneficiaries.
