Despite ' the dissatisfaction with his stand dur ing the recent political campaign and hiB own declaration that he would not again be a candidate, the re election of Samuel Gompers is prac tically conceded at the 28th annual convention of the American Federa tion of Labor, which opened iu thiB city today. The fight against Ciom pera, however, will be bitter. His op ponents declare that he took the American Federation of Labor into politics in violation of Its constitution and by-laws. There are also many Socialist defegates who are opposed to Gompers, owing to the stand he has taken against their political creed. The leading candldato against flir.ipers Is .Inmes Lynch, of tins Typographical union. John Mitchell, former president of the United Mine Workers, is. also mentioned to suc ceed Gompers, The convention opened with ad dresses of welcome by Governor But chell and Mayor Speer. The sessions will continue two weeks. In his annual report, PresldenI gompers 'asserted that the present uck of work Is the result of govern ment errors. The trouble growing out of the "federation blacklist" will be discus sed during the convention. Last win ter the Hacks Stove and Range Com pany of St. Louis secured an Injunc tion restraining Gompers from print ing the name of the concern lu the "We Don't Patronize" list ot the American Federal lonlst, the official organ of the American Federation of Labor. Gompers nominally obeyed the injunction, but only nominally, having made all sorts of references to it, and to the fact that organized labor is against the Bucks Company. This led to a contempt case against him. In this case, the federation Is solidly back of Gompers, and one and all the delegates believe that the in-' junction was a violation of the fun damental right of free speech and a free press. In the custody of Sheriff Fenton, Rev. George Clark, or SummerB, ar rested at Cardlner last Saturday, left Hosehurg this morning for Salem to fight extradition to Throckmorton, Texas, where ho was indicted in 1 D04 under the name of Summers, on the charge of ohtninlng money under falee prctentes. Circumstances sur rounding the case militate heavily against him. however, and if certain allegations are true he will have to face a more serious charge than thai on which he is indicted. Rev. Claik, or Summers, as his name may he, tins been stationed at Gardiner but a short tinio punt. Pre viously he filled pulpits elsewhere In Oregon, Originally ho came from Throckmorton, Texas, according lo his own admission, and while there, he said, he wos connected with n small college. Ho was formerly of the South Methodist denomination, but in 1904 secured a transfer to the M. K. Church, North, and received assignments in the Oregon con Ter ence. Rev. Clark's arrest was Instigated by John Parrott, a former resident of Throckmorton, , Tex., who, ns hance would have it, located nl Gar diner a Tew weeks ago. He claims, so It Is reported, to have recognized in the woman whom ('lurk calls his wife and with whom he was living at Gardiner, n playmate of IUh child hood days. The woman, furthermore, according to IiIb assertion. Is a slster of his uncle's wife. From tho fact that he had never learned of such o marriage of the woman to n minis ter, Parrott became suspicious and wrote letters -of Inquiry to relatives at Throckmorton; among them his uncle. ' Ilrief correspondence follow ed, culminating In Sheriff Fenton re ceiving a telegram last Friday In structing him to place the minister under arrest. Clark's real name Is declared to he SummerB, and ho Is alleged to have deserted a wife and two children in Texas. Matters are complicated all the more by Ihe fact that tho woman at Gardiner Is the mother of two children, the elder of whom Is 3 years of age. The fads concerning the charge of obtaining money under false pretenses nru not known, but It. Is believed to have been returned by tho TcxnH Jury In the absence of knowledge of a more erlous crime, if one Iiiih been com mitted. What weighs stronger than any thing else ngalnst the minister Is bin silence regarding his marriage to the woman with whom he has been living at Gardiner. He could not produce a marriage certificate when asked for it, and when he was requested to name the place and date of the mar riage he was silent. It was pointed out to him that the authorities could verify any statement by tele graphing Immediately, hut the min ister made no statement that would clear the ugly charges against him. Die npparent Indication of guilt from this circumstance Is strengthened by the fact that Clark Is resisting the effort to remove him to Texas for trial. In explanation of this act nnd of his refusal to answer questions concerning bis supposed marriage to tbe woman at Gardiner, Rev. Clark said : 'I will proceed In my defense one step at a time. When I am cleared I will prosecute John Parrott for per jury." Rev. James K.
