(JtorRo Fred WJUianiH, After a Tour, Hay IMuralily Only CucNtion. PORTLAND, Or., Ont. 8-UevorBal of the Roosevelt-Park r sweep for the Democrats! That'll tho way OeorKe Fred Wil liams, former 'representative In con gregu frorai MaBHacliusottB, campaign Ing the wont for the democratic par ty, puts the election of liryan and Kern, which will be all over but the shouting four, weeks from now. Mr. Williams dropped in from the south this -morning. "I have talked to democrats and republicans everywhere," Mr. Wil liams said, " and I find that there has never been anything like the change In the political history of the country. The election of Hryan la ansured. ' It will be more than a landslide,' I don't know what to cnll it. New York for Hryan, Sure. "New York Is assured for the democrats.' Bo is Illinois, and posHlb ly Rhode Island. Oh, yes, there's Ohio. And there Is Indiana! In diana going democratic! What do you know about that! No one claims Indiana at this date for the repub licans. "And there 1s Kansas. JuBt came from there. Talked to the editor of a German iaper who said practically all the German republicans were for Bryan this year. Same thing Is true relative to the German vote all over the country . Don't know Just what has brought the change for the bet ter. It's true nevertheless. "Then there Is the labor voto. You all know how they are coming over to our side. I never appreciated It so fully, however, until I began trav elling about the country and talking to the people tnlkiug to men who understand things generallly, and who know just what's going on. OHh the Colored Vote. "Then there Is tho colored vote. That's ours In the greater majority. And the soldiers those who served In the Philippines, particularly. Hut the greatest lead we have is among the republicans who are going to vote for Bryan. Roosevelt's hutting In, I find, Is responsible for the chango of many of these persons." Mr. Williams visited Johnstown and other Pennsylvania cltlen nnd towns In Quay's own district. hi one place a worklngmans democratic club had 33 republican members who were going to vote for Hryan. In another small town thero were 21! republicans who had gone over to the democratic side, and were mem bers of the Hryan club. Mr. p Williams says there Is no question an to tho result of the elec tion. The only thing now is the plurality. WILL 'THY AGAIN. Joino Wlthyrunihe Ht 111 Has lOye on Dragon (JovemorNlilp, PORTLAND, Or., Oot. 8. James Wlthycombe, of Corvallis, republican nominee for governor In 1906, Is go ing to try It again.. Already, two years before- -the next election, ho ts holding his ear to the ground and Is considering the call of tho people. Mr. Wlthycombo was a Portland visitor yesterday and, so the story goest opened the Pamlora'B box of his political, ambitions while hero iu conversation with R. K. Williams, national republican committeeman for Oregon. At that time, so it In reported, Mr. Wlthycombo said that he was receiving urgent and insistent requests from friends throiiKhout Iho state In large numbers urging him to be a candidate and that he was con slderlng tho proHmltlon. The probable candidacy of Mr. Wlthyrombe adds one more to the already long Hut of prominent men who have their eyes on the place. I'p In eastern Oregon Judge Stephen A. lo well, of Pendleton Is reputed to be a possible candidate. Superin tendent of Public Instruction J. 11. Ackernian Is nlso a candidate. J. W. Italley, state dairy and food com missioner, has-his eye on the Job. so his frlendH say, though Mr. Italley himself will not admit It. District Attorney Cameron alo Is training his forces on the st at chouse at Sa lem. Judge L. It. Webster is talked of as a possibility. Then in addition . there are perhaps a dnien other men who either are being urged to train for the race or who are urging Mint , they should do so. it in a certainty that there will ho plenty of men to fill the place when the time comes for the people to decide who will be governor. Collier's Weekly has a significant editorial In Its Issue of August 2 entitle'!. "The Republicans anJ Money." It Is given herewith: "The election and subsequent denth of Mr. Tatt would mean the occn pancy of the White House by an of!l cial fat-fryer who bus during scv era! years paat approached, with def erential hat in hand, the president or treasurer of moat of the larye cor porations In the country. It was in the course of this ofltciul function thit Sherman wss profanely turned down by Mr. Harrlmun, with bitter denu'i elation of the Republican- party and reeking mesHagos for the head of tint party, that the party and tho head of it had not been grateful for the f 20, 000 which Mr. Harrlamn collected and which Mr Harrlman collected and gave tn 1904. Penrose, as one of tho executive committee of nine which Is to do the actual work of the Repub lican campaign. Is In error of taste. and Judgment but not a great dual worse With T. Coleman Du Pont of Delaware, however the case differs. Among the combinations now being prosecuted by the Federal Govern' went Is that aggregation of compan I ob known as the Powder Trust. Mr. Du Pont Is president of the fifty mil lion dollar Du Pont Powder Company, president of the ten million d tll;ir International Powder Company, direc tor of the International Smokeless Powder Company, and vice-president of the holding company, the Dela ware Seeuritlea Company, which owns a majority of the stock of the Laflln & Rand Powder Company. Stipposu that Mr. Taft. being succesHfitl, should be approached by Mr Du Pont t'.ius: 'I am one of the ten men, including Chairman Hitchcock, who have put you over the plate. I don't want to be reminding you continually of the obligation; there Is one smalt piece of patronage I should like, and I shan't speak to you about patronage again during your administration. There Ik a deserving young friend of mine whom I should like to have appoint' ed to the position lately held by Mr Purdy. In charge of that bureau oT the Department of Justice which Is seeking to break up my company, deprive of some of my property, and decline me a violator of the law. Something analogous would have been the pres ence of Harry Thaw two years ago on a committee of ten to collect fumlH and promote the election of Jerome ns district attorney. A minority plank, calling for a statute providing for publicity of campaign expend! turea, was thrown out of the am mlttoe on resolutions by a vote of fi to 1, and was rejected on the il-iur of the convention by a vote of US) to 94 Nebraska and Idaho and parts of Wisconsin and Indiana fuvorlng it The amoilnt of Hotirhonlsm still left In the Republican party Is far too largo." "The People do rule." says Sher man, the candidate of tho frusta for Vlce-Presld.mt. The truth Is that a hilt Introduced for the protection of the rich ta pf the people cannot even he voted on In tho house where Can non and Sherman rule the roo.st. It Is bad enough thut under tho dic tation of the speaker and his Com Dilttee on Rifles, labor bills are Strang led and not permitted to come to a vote. Hut. worse than that, If poa ilnlo. In (he fact that the Speaker picks committees so that bills that he does not Ilka cannot even get a hear ing, but are strangled In committee by direction of the Spenkor. The peo-. pie are up In arms all over the conn try, and AnU-CaoBonlstu Is growing in popularity. A Lazy Liver May b only a tired liver, or a startr llvor. The fun eral ceremonies were conducted at the home of the deceased, by Hev. W. S. Smith, of the i'reshyturian church. A song and prayer were of fered at the cemetery. The Moral tributes offered by the several lodges, as well as by personal friends, were of rare beauty and iu great profusion.
